CcChapter 21 I admire you
Gwen caught up to Megan just as she reached the elevator.
Megan stopped and turned around, her expression composed. “Ms. Cavill, can I help you with something?”
Gwen fought the urge to slap her across the face, forcing a polite, sugary smile. “Ms. Ridley, judging by your outfit and accessories, you must come from a very prominent family. Would you mind telling me which one? I’d love to get to know you better.”
Megan’s nails dug into her palm.
Everything she wore, everything she ate, everything she used- was bought for her by Hugh.
And six years ago, when she’d dated Hugh, the Cavill family already knew her background inside and out.
Gwen asking this now was clearly a deliberate slap to the face.
Megan swallowed the humiliation and answered graciously, “You’re too kind. I’m just an ordinary girl from a very ordinary family.”
Gwen crossed her arms and deliberately drew out he words:20 “Then maybe your husband is the one with money? Which powerful family did you marry into? I might even know them.”
Megan’s eyes darted to Bethan, her expression faltering. “I’m not married, Ms. Cavill.”
Bethan’s knees nearly buckled. She had to grab the wall to stay upright.
She didn’t marry and yet she had a five-year-old son. There was no doubt now. That child was Hugh’s.
Gwen raised her thumb in mock admiration. “Wow. You must really be something, Ms. Ridley. What do you do for work? Let’s be friends. I admire self-made women like you. Independent, successful, not relying on a man to survive. No clinging. No leeching. Just pure grit.”
Megan’s cheeks flushed with shame. She gave Bethan a quick, apologetic glance, then quickly looked away.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Cavill. I have something urgent to attend to,” she said, keeping her head low.
Before Gwen could respond, Megan had already stepped into the elevator and let the doors close behind her.
Gwen was about to chase after her when Bethan grabbed her arm.
Gwen stomped her foot in frustration. “Bethan, I didn’t even get to slap her!”
Bethan, pale and shaken, pulled Gwen to a quiet corner.
Her voice was low, calm, but heavy with exhaustion. “Gwen, I know you’re doing this for me. But even if you slapped her right now, it wouldn’t change the fact that she and Hugh are back together. Hugh loves her. He loves their child. If he finds out, he’ll only feel hurt and angry. Please don’t stir things up anymore.”
Her medical books and documents were still there. She needed to study that night.
If it weren’t for that, she honestly would’ve stayed with her parents a few more days.
After showering and changing into pajamas, Bethan climbed into bed with her laptop and began studying.
Around ten, she heard the sound of a car engine outside.
A few minutes later, the bedroom door opened, and Hugh walked in, wearing a dark business suit. His expression was grim.
Bethan’s brows knitted into a frown the moment she saw him.
He’d said he was going on a business trip for a full week. It had only been three days since he left. Why had he come back so soon?
She could tell from the look on his face that he had something to say.
But Hugh didn’t speak. He cast her a glance, then walked straight into the bathroom.
The sound of water running behind the door filled the room, and Bethan found herself unable to focus on her reading.
