Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 22

Chapter 22 What Did You Say

She shut her laptop and stacked her books neatly on the nightstand. Then she leaned back against the pillows and waited, silently, for Hugh to come out.

Every time Hugh returned from outside, the first thing he did was shower. It had always been his habit.

And at some point, without even realizing it, that habit had become hers too.

She loved the way he smelled after a shower. She loved falling asleep in his arms.

Back when she was happiest, Bethan had once told Hugh, “I love you so much. I need you to hold me every night, or I’ll die of heartbreak.”

But ever since the day she discovered his affair, she’d spent nearly every night alone-restless, sleepless, and tormented.

And yet she was still alive. That was how the world worked. No one was truly indispensable. Even if she loved Hugh to the point of breaking, she could still hold herself together- suffering in silence, slowly preparing to leave him.

When Hugh emerged from the shower in a set of dar coloredo paiamas. Bethan was sitting on the bed. staring blankly into space.

His gaze swept over the stack of medical textbooks on her nightstand. He reached out and casually flipped through a few pages before sitting down at the edge of the bed.

His tone was unreadable. “Why the sudden interest in medical books again?”

Bethan didn’t answer.

Hugh reached out and gently tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. “Do you want me to find you a less demanding job?”

Bethan shook her head. “My parents have already moved out of the downtown apartment. It’s been cleaned and reset. The door code’s still the same. It hasn’t been changed. They told me to let you know. You can take the place back.”

Hugh showed no reaction. “Where did they move to?”

Bethan didn’t hide it. “Harbor Road. It’s closer to my dad’s factory.”

His expression darkened slightly. “Bethan, I’m the heir to the Cavill Group. Do you really think it’s appropriate for my wife’s parents to live in a place like that?”

Bethan looked up at him. “We don’t want to owe you anything.”

Hugh replied coldly, “Do you think the Olsen family hasn’t already taken enough from me over the years?”

They locked eyes, tension rising thick between them.

Bethan was the first to break, lowering her gaze in shame.
