Chapter 231 He Wanted the Best of Both Worlds
He poured himself a glass of red wine and stood by the
window.
In a crisp white shirt and black tailored trousers, he looked effortlessly commanding, one hand cradling his wineglass, the other holding a phone.
“Sir Locke,” he said smoothly, “come to New York when you have time. Let me play host properly.”
The call ended. A moment later, Jacob’s phone rang.
His face twisted when he saw the caller ID.
He walked reluctantly over to Hugh. “Mr. Cavill, Ms. Ridley
has been calling again. Do you want to handle it personally this time?”
Hugh lowered his eyes to the red liquid swirling in his glass. “Take care of it. Make sure Megan and her son can live comfortably in New York. That’s all that matters.”
Jacob forced a smile but didn’t dare say what he was really
thinking.

Ever since Hugh had told him to handle Megan’s affairs, his own life had become a nightmare.
Before, Megan at least had the decency not to call past midnight.
Now she was worse-blowing up his phone day and night, leaving him no peace.
Because of her, he couldn’t sleep, and his wife snapped at him constantly. Twice, she’d even kicked him out of bed in the middle of the night, hard enough that his back nearly gave out.
At this rate, if Hugh didn’t file for divorce, he would.
A knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts. Fiona walked in. Jacob poured the coffee, bowed out, and shut the door behind him.
Hugh led Fiona to the lounge.
She didn’t waste any time.
“Hugh,” Fiona said directly, “I’m sure you’ve already heard about Megan.”
Hugh sat across from Fiona, leaning forward with his elbows
resting on his knees.

His head dipped slightly before he gave a faint nod,
Fiona’s expression was grave. “Bethan is becoming more and more outrageous. Not long ago, while you were on a business trip, she upset your grandfather so badly that he ended up in the hospital. And until now, she still hasn’t gone to see him.”
Hugh lowered his eyes, hiding whatever flickered in their depths.
Bethan treated him like a stranger these days. As for his family, she had long since shut them out completely.
When Hugh didn’t answer, Fiona pressed on. “Your situation with Megan is already a fact. If Bethan keeps making a scene, everyone will be embarrassed. I’ve already spoken with your father and your grandfather. If you don’t want to remarry, we won’t force you. But you should end things with Bethan and settle Megan and her child properly. After all, that boy is your blood.”
Hugh’s face hardened, his tone unyielding. “Mom, my marriage is my own business. I don’t want anyone interfering.”
Fiona set down her cup with a sharp clink. “Hugh, I didn’t come here today to discuss. Like it or not, Hudson is a Cavill. Megan’s troubles affect his wellbeing. That child’s future depends on you.”

Frustration flared in Hugh’s chest. He shot to his feet and paced once across the office.

Finally, he swallowed down his temper. “I never said I’d ignore them. I have a project meeting coming up. We’ll talk later.”
Fiona stood, slipping her purse onto her arm.
Her voice was heavy with warning. “If you can’t control Bethan, if you can’t make her obey, then you need to seriously consider divorce. We are the Cavills. We cannot afford to be humiliated.”
Hugh’s expression shifted instantly.
He had promised Bethan-he would respect her, believe her, never again threaten or coerce her.
No matter how stubborn she was, he would not force her.
But Fiona’s next words cut deep. “Bethan is far too close to Mr. Keating, and she keeps making trouble. Honestly, I think Megan may be more suitable for you.”
Hugh’s face darkened. “Stop it, Mom. I have no intention of replacing my wife.”
Fiona gave him a long, complicated look before turning away:52 476

Hugh had everything, except when it came to love-there, he was hopeless.
He wanted the best of both worlds-the family’s dignity and
the thrill of a mistress.
Fiona herself had once endured betrayal, endured her in-laws’ cruelty, endured the humiliation of a mistress and her child breathing down her neck. She had crushed them back then.
And now? She would make sure her son did not repeat the same mistake.
That evening, after a long day at work, Hugh still had no way to vent his frustration.
He skipped going home and drank with Mason and the others
until after ten.
