Chapter 238 Turning Her Love Into Hatred
Hugh’s eyes stayed shut, his chest rising and falling unevenly. “You know that child isn’t mine.”
Mason dismissed the objection with a shrug. “Doesn’t matter whose blood runs in his veins. If you claim him, then he’s yours.”
The silence between them thickened until Mason’s voice cut through again. “But you―tonight, you couldn’t help yourself. You hugged Megan in the street. Admit it, Hugh. You love her.”
Hugh’s voice was low, ragged. “I didn’t hug her. Bethan just misunderstood.”
Mason sat on the edge of the coffee table, ticking off the memories on his fingers. “Bethan ‘misunderstood’ tonight? What about the night Megan flew back, and you sneaked out at midnight to pick her up? That was a misunderstanding too?
“What about the month you lied about business trips, when you were actually holed up with her every night? Or the mansion you bought for her, the driver and housekeeper you hired? Were those all misunderstandings as well?
You even claimed her son as your own-don’t tell me Bethhh59

misunderstood that, too. Every time you ran back to Megan, every wound Bethan suffered…You brushed it all off as a mistake.”
He leaned closer, eyes like steel. “But these weren’t accidents, Hugh. No one held a gun to your head. No one forced you. These were choices you made.”
Mason’s voice hardened. “Whether you’ll admit it or not, you abandoned the woman who loved you most for Megan.”
Looking down at Hugh’s state, Mason sighed. Sleep would not come easily to him tonight.
He rose to his feet. “She’s been your closest friend since childhood. Stop breaking her down. Stop turning her love into
hatred.”
When Mason left, Hugh remained on the sofa, unmoving.
His empty gaze fixed on the ceiling, the corners of his eyes reddening, lashes trembling as if they could no longer hold back the weight inside.
The next morning, outside the hospital’s outpatient building, Bethan stepped out of a car-only to see Hugh waiting on the sidewalk.

immaculate, carrying a paper bag of breakfast in one hand. Yet fatigue was etched plainly into his eyes.
When he moved toward her, Bethan stopped walking.
His gaze held a rare note of caution.
“I bought your favorite bread,” he said softly, holding the bag out to her.
Bethan glanced at him, took it in silence, then turned and tossed it straight into the trash can.
Hugh’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t try to stop her.
“Is there anything else?” Bethan asked coolly.
He checked his watch, then looked back at her with pleading eyes. “Bethan, believe me. I only went to her to settle things. I never held her. I never-”
Bethan cut him off, her voice sharp. “She’s already given you a son, Hugh. Do you really think these explanations mean anything now?”
Their eyes met and held.

“The child was born six years ago,” Hugh said, his voice low but firm. “That was before you and I married. When I stood at the altar with you, I didn’t even know he existed. Bethan, are you really willing to end our marriage over a child that was never part of us?”
It was the only explanation he could give-something to calm her down while hiding the truth of the boy’s parentage.
But Bethan refused to yield. “Yes, that child came before me. Yes, maybe you didn’t know then. But what about now?”
Her voice sharpened. “Ever since Megan came back with her son, have the two of you ever stopped?”
Her face was pale, but her eyes were blazing. “Hugh, we’ve known each other for more than twenty years. Tell me, what have I ever done to deserve this kind of torment from you?”
Hugh shook his head wildly, forcing a broken smile. “No. Never. I never wanted to hurt you, Bethan. That was never my
intention.”
I just want to hold our marriage together.
Bethan stared into his eyes, her own expression hardening; 9:59 “The only reason I’ve put up with this at all is because you

promised you’d never interfere with my work. If you break that promise too, then I’ll have nothing left to lose.”
She pushed him aside and walked away.
As she went, a silent thought steeled her. Once she finished treating James, she would call in that favor. She would have him protect her family.
And once her family was no longer her weakness, she wouldn’t be afraid of going to war with Hugh-no matter the cost.
At nine o’clock, in the Cavill Group’s headquarters boardroom, Jacob noticed Hugh staring into space again and quickly called out, “Mr. Cavill?”
