“Mr. Cavill, during the meeting, Mrs. Fiona Cavill called. He asked me to remind you-this weekend, please bring Mrs. Cavill home. It seems the family is expecting guests.”

Hugh waved him off irritably, and Jacob bowed out without another word.

Hugh opened Bethan’s WhatsApp chat, typed a sentence, hovered over the send button-then deleted everything.

A sudden thought seized him. Grabbing his jacket, he strode out of the office.

At ten o’clock, Bethan slipped back into the house while Hugh should have been at work. She needed her laptop, a few personal things, and some fresh clothes.

Andy had made it clear he didn’t welcome her at Keating Mansion. At best she could stay there only a few days. So she packed quickly, shoving essentials into a suitcase.

But when she heard the bedroom door unlocking behind her, her heart jolted. She spun around-only to see Hugh walk inside.

Her brows knit instantly. “Why are you here?”

In a few strides he was in front of her, ripping the suitcase from her hands. “Where are you planning to go?”

Bethan’s answer was blunt. “I’m in a bad mood. I’m going to Keating Mansion for a few days to clear my head.”

Hugh’s eyes searched her face, his tone softening as he tried to compromise. “If you want a change of scenery, I’ll take you anywhere you want. But Keating Mansion isn’t where you belong.”

Her patience snapped. “Hugh, being around you is what makes me miserable. Every time I see you, I feel suffocated. Do you really want me to spell it out that plainly?”

Their eyes locked, and Hugh swayed back a step as if her words had struck him physically.

His voice cracked as he conceded, “Last night was my fault for lying to you. I’ll stay at the office the next few days. I won’t come home. Will that be enough?”

Bethan shoved him aside. “No.”

She grabbed the handle of her suitcase, but before she could leave, Hugh lost control. He pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.

“Bethan, if you don’t believe me, I’ll swear it,” he said desperately. “Since Megan came back with that child, yes, I’ve taken care of them, I’ve looked out for them-but I 375

touched her. I’ve never betrayed you. Please, just this once, believe me.”

Bethan knew if she let herself keep struggling, she would never break free.

She forced herself to breathe, then softened her voice to the gentlest tone she could manage.

She said, “Words mean nothing, Hugh. Only actions do. Let me leave. Give me a few days to calm down. When I’m ready, you can come to Keating Mansion and take me home yourself.”

Hugh reluctantly loosened his hold on Bethan, though his hands still lingered as if he couldn’t quite let her go.

His eyes searched hers. “Really?” he asked quietly.

Bethan lifted her hand and spread five fingers. “Five days. Just five. Give me that time to calm down. After five days, you come to Keating Mansion to pick me up. If I don’t go home with you then, I’ll eat my words.”

It was the only way she could get him to let her go. The more he tried to keep her, the more determined she became to leave -Pandora’s effect in its purest form.

Sometimes, compromise was the only strategy-take one step59 back in order to walk away at all.

Hugh fell silent, weighing her words.

Finally, he said carefully, “Three to five days might be acceptable. But Aunt Melissa’s family is flying back tomorrow. My parents want us to return to Cavill Manor together to welcome them.”
