Chapter 24 We’re Still Married

Of course. He was probably here for Megan.

Bethan kept her composure as she passed him without a word.

Everything she’d said the night before-the threats to drag him through court, the vows to destroy him—had all been said in the heat of the moment.

No matter how much she hated him, she still had her parents and her younger brother to think of.

Hugh had her cornered. All she could do was lose control behind closed doors. In public, she was powerless.

Hugh silently watched her walk past him, then followed without a word.

He reached out and caught her wrist, pulling her gently back to him. “Bethan,” he said, his voice low. “We can argue all we want, but don’t forget—we’re still married.”

Bethan yanked her hand free. “Your precious Megan is probably waiting. You should go.”

He didn’t explain. He just took her hand again and said. “I came to pick you up. Let’s go see your parents together,”

She stopped walking. Bethan knew exactly what that meant- this was his attempt at making peace,

Every time she got upset, he had a pattern-sent jewelry, delivered expensive gifts to her parents, or, like now,

volunteered to accompany her home and played the role of dutiful husband.

But an apology? Explanation? Those were never part of the deal.

Bethan’s expression didn’t change. “Don’t bother. My parents aren’t worth your effort.”

That hit a nerve. Hugh could tell she was lashing out, but he didn’t react.

Instead, he tightened his grip on her hand. “I already called Miranda. She made your favorite fish. I’ll have a couple of drinks with Vincent.”

Bethan was furious he had gone behind her back again, but she also didn’t want her parents waiting for nothing. So she bit down her anger and said nothing more.

As they walked past groups of pedestrians, Bethan caught the envious glances being thrown their way. She turned to glance at Hugh beside her.

He wore an impeccably tailored black suit, elegant and striking. Wherever he went, he drew attention without even trying.
