Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 25

Chapter 25 An Uncontrollable Panic

During the meal, he brought up the idea of them moving back to the city again.

In the past, Vincent and Miranda always listened to him. In their eyes, Hugh was their pride and joy. They never stopped praising him, wherever they went.

But this time, even after Hugh suggested it twice, they didn’t say yes.

Bethan understood why. Her parents had their reservations.

She had told them it was all a misunderstanding, that Hugh hadn’t cheated. But no smoke without fire-of course her parents were worried.

Hugh was sharp enough to read the room. After two attempts, he dropped the subject.

After dinner, Bethan left with Hugh.

The black card she had returned was quietly left behind by Hugh again.

Miranda found it afterward, slipped it into Bethan’s bag without a word, and made sure she took it back.

On the way home, Bethan returned the card to Hugh. “My parents won’t take anything from you anymore. Please don’t insist.”

Hugh had had some wine that evening, and his gaze on Bethan was hazy, almost tender.

He stared at her flawless face, then gently took her hand in his. Slowly, he pulled her closer.

But just then, his phone vibrated in his pocket.

They froze. Bethan instinctively pulled her hand back. Hugh reached for his phone.

Before he could answer the call, the line disconnected. Immediately after, a flurry of message alerts started pinging nonstop.

Bethan stared at him, unmoving, her hands clenched tightly at her sides.

She felt like she was sick. Every time his phone rang-whether it was a call or a message-if he so much as hesitated, she’d spiral into an uncontrollable panic. She couldn’t help it.

Hugh powered off the screen and slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Whatever softness had been in his eyes vanished with that simple gesture. He said nothing else.

With the driver still in the car, Bethan fought to keep her emotions under control. She didn’t ask.

The rest of the ride was silent. When they got to the front of her place, Hugh got out of the car and opened her door for her himself.

At that moment, Gwen arrived with a bag in hand, getting out of a separate car.
