Chapter 29 Need To Talk To You

Gwen inched behind Mason like a child seeking shelter. “If you dare send me away, I swear I’ll tell everyone about your affair.”

Hugh’s chest rose sharply with fury. “If Bethan and I really end up divorced, part of the blame will be yours.”

Just then, movement came from inside the hospital room, and Hugh immediately turned and walked in.

Megan looked up from the bed. The moment she saw him, her already fragile emotions visibly frayed.

She bit back the pain from her injuries and got out of bed barefoot, walking slowly over to him. “Hugh, I need to talk to you.”

Hugh glanced at the housekeeper standing nearby. The woman took the hint and quickly excused herself from the room.

He helped Megan back onto the bed and pulled up a chair beside her. “You’re still injured. You shouldn’t be getting up.”

Megan’s face was pale, her tears held in with visible effort. “Hugh, Gwen was just venting for Mrs. Cavill. I’m sure she hates me now.”

homewrecker. She hit me, screamed at me, and said I was spending your money. And she’s just your sister. If it had been your wife who came to my door last night, she probably would’ve killed me.”

Hugh’s protective tone left no room for doubt. “Megan, don’t worry. As long as I’m here, no one will lay a finger on you or the baby.”

Megan took his hand in hers and finally broke down in tears.

“I know I was selfish, not letting you explain things to Mrs. Cavill,” she said through soft sobs. “But I was scared. Six years ago, one word from your grandfather was enough to destroy our future. He and your parents still have the power lo ruin me.

“Mrs. Cavill already hates me this much. If she ever finds out what I’ve been through, if she learns the truth about my son, she’ll tell everyone. And your family… They’ll hate me even more. They’ll think I’m disgusting

Tears streamed down her cheeks. “If that happens, how am I supposed to survive in New York How can I face my family and friends? If I didn’t come to you, who else could I turn to?”
