Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 351

Chapter 351 Never Bounce Back

Lucky Draw

Just as Hugh caught sight of Fiona stepping in, he nonchalantly stashed the painkillers into his pocket.

“Stop hiding. I saw that,” Fiona chided gently, her voice laced with concern.

She ushered Hugh over to the couch and sat him down.

Fiona then ladled out the medicinal cuisine for stomach nourishment she had brought.

Out of the blue, Hugh asked, “Hey, Mom, did you have a little chat with Alina on your way up?”

Fiona let out a tired sigh. “With all the stuff back at home waiting for me, there wasn’t a minute to spare. Why’d you ask?”

“Just a random thought.” Hugh shrugged it off.

Fiona sized her son up for a moment. “So, have you finally come around and decided to get engaged to Alina?”

Hugh set his spoon down and shook his head firmly. “Mom, I’m not gonna marry her.”

Picking up the bowl, Fiona nudged it back towards Hugh.

“You took Bethy away and then brought her back safe. Whether it was by choice or not, it’s done. Put it behind you and focus on

getting better. Time heals all wounds.”

Hugh’s fingers tightened around the bowl.

He’d lost his one true love, his marriage was kaput, and his home was in tatters. He felt like he’d never bounce back.

But he knew he had to let her go, no matter how much it hurt.

As Fiona saw her son’s heartache, her own heart twisted.

“Hugh, I know it’s tough, but you’ve got to face the music. Think about your family, your responsibilities. Don’t be so pig-headed.”

Hugh’s eyes welled up with sorrow.

His voice thick with emotion, he reassured Fiona, “Mom, don’t fret about me. I just need a bit more time to get used to the idea of losing Bethy for good. Give me some time.”

Instead of being comforted, Fiona grew more worried.

Her expression turned serious. “If you really don’t want to marry Alina, I’ll try to work things out. But you have to promise me you’ll follow the doctor’s orders and get well.

“You’ve already let Bethy down. Don’t let the rest of us down, too.”

Hugh slumped in his seat and mumbled an agreement.

Fiona got to her feet, looking utterly spent. “Your sister was forced into a date with Oliver Davis from the Davis family. I’ve got to head back and see how it went.”

Walking her to the door, Hugh said, “Mom, Oliver isn’t the right guy for Gwen.”

Fiona rubbed her temples. “Your grandpa and dad were dead-set on it. Gwen probably just went along to shut them up.”

At six in the evening, the city center was bustling. Bethan parked her car in front of a well-known mall, gearing up to do some shopping.

But just as she opened the car door and stepped out, Mason popped up seemingly from thin air. Without a word, he grabbed her arm and tugged her towards a posh restaurant next door.

Once inside the restaurant’s warm, dimly-lit interior, Bethan’s eyes immediately landed on Gwen sitting at a table.

Mason put a finger to his lips, hushing her, and then guided her quietly to a booth right behind Gwen.

Bethan couldn’t help but smirk a bit as she watched Mason order their food like a spy on a secret mission.

It was an open secret that Mason had been doting on Gwen since she was a little girl.

Even though Gwen was a bit of a late-bloomer in the romance department and often oblivious to romantic advances, and despite Mason always grumbling about her but never admitting his true feelings, Bethan knew his feelings for Gwen,

Settled in the booth, they hunched over, cars pricked up to catch every word of the conversation at Gwen’s table.

Gwen looked like a vision in her simple yet striking orange suit, radiating a bright and confident aura.

Across from her sat her blind date, Oliver, looking every bit the playboy in his white casual suit. Underneath, a deep-V hot-pink shirt peeked out, paired with permed and dyed short hair, a royal-blue stud in his ear, a trendy collar chain, and a ring on his pinky. He was lounging back in his chair, a lazy smile on his face, looking like he couldn’t care less.

The two exchanged a quick once-over. Gwen decided to cut to the chase. “Look, I’ll be straight with you. I’m here because my family’s been breathing down my neck,” she said, her tone matter-of-fact.

Oliver let out a short laugh. “Well, what a coincidence. I’m here because my old man threatened me with a stick,” he quipped.

Gwen didn’t miss a beat. “I’ve got no plans to get married or have kids. That’s just not in my future,” she declared firmly.

“I can’t stand the little ankle-biters. No kids? That’s a plus,” Oliver replied.

Taking a deep breath, Gwen continued. “I’m not gonna work, either. I need at least five million bucks a month to keep me going,” she said, waiting to see his reaction.

Oliver thumped his chest, puffing up a bit. “Money’s not an issue for me. I know how to treat a lady right when it comes to spending.”

Gwen was about to say more, slamming her hand on the table, but Oliver interrupted her.

“Come on, how many lines did you rehearse before you came? Just spill ’em, and I’ll help you out,” he said with a teasing grin.
