Chapter 362 Unbreakable Barrier
A sense of indescribable unease settled over Hugh as he watched Bethan fumbling around, trying to take care of Calvin.
Even without him, there was always another man ready to risk it all to save and protect her.
His eyes, rimmed red with a mix of frustration, despair, and heartache, were fixed on Bethan, who was sobbing uncontrollably over another man.
Just then, little Henry came running out of the car, wailing, “Bethan, Dad…”
Bethan quickly scooped Henry up in her arms, cooing softly to comfort the crying boy.
Hugh tightened his fists, struggling to suppress the churning emotions within. He made his way over to Bethan, his usually cold and proud voice now thick and hoarse.
“The ambulance’ll be here soon. He’ll pull through,” he murmured.
But Bethan seemed oblivious to his words. Hugging Henry close, she stayed glued to Calvin’s side, repeatedly calling his name in a desperate attempt to wake him un

superfluous presence.

mistakes.
Yet, fate always seemed to conspire against him, leaving him perpetually a step behind.
There was always someone else stepping into the role he so desperately wanted to fill, a constant reminder that he no longer had a place in Bethan’s life.
Not long after, two paramedics hopped out of the ambulance and asked the family to help move Calvin onto the stretcher.
Hugh stepped forward and stopped Bethan. “The kid’s too young. You take him in the car. I’ll go with the ambulance,” he offered.
Bethan glanced down at Henry, whose face was streaked with tears, and simply nodded.
By the wee hours of the morning, Calvin was wheeled into a hospital room.
Bethan gently laid the sleeping Henry on the bed in the adjoining room and then stepped back out.

His heart sank at her cold dismissal.
Unable to hold back, he blurted out, “Bethy, who exactly are you thanking me on behalf of?”
Bethan shot him a cold look but remained silent.
Seeing her evade the question, Hugh tried to keep his voice calm and reasonable.
“You’ve got work tomorrow. Let me drive you home so you can get some rest.”
Bethan refused without hesitation, “No, I’ll stay here and look after them.”
Hugh’s expression darkened. “If you’re really worried, I’ll get a couple of nurses. It’s not proper for you to be taking care of a grown man like this.”
Staring him straight in the eye, Bethan said sternly, “When we were married, you didn’t bat an eye at leaving me alone for over a month for that woman you loved. You stayed with her day and night.
“Now, Calvin and I are both single. What’s the big deal about me taking care of him?”

respond.
He’d been drowning in regret ever since that fateful incident, which had become an unbreakable barrier between them.
Bethan reminded him, “Hugh, in a few months, it’ll be 27 years since we met. For the sake of your mom and Gwen, I don’t wanna make things messy. And don’t you forget what you promised me on the island!”
They locked eyes in a tense silence.
Finally, Hugh managed to choke out. “Get some rest then.”
After Hugh turned around and left the hospital ward, Bethan promptly closed the door behind him.
Standing outside the ward, Hugh peered through the transparent window. There, inside, Bethan was by Calvin’s bedside, gently moistening his lips with a cotton swab.
The sight of Bethan’s tender and careful gestures felt like a sharp dagger twisting in Hugh’s heart. The pain was so intense that it made it hard for him to breathe.
They had known each other since childhood, over two decades of friendship.
