Chapter 381 If You Could Head Over
Bethan walked on in silence, averting her eyes.
When fatigue hit, she’d halt to catch a breath before resuming her journey.
It was a busy afternoon in New York. She stopped beside a gargantuan tree, tenderly stroking its branches.
A couple of years ago, this area was dotted with shanties waiting to be torn down.
After the Olsen family went belly-up, her parents rented a place here with her and Barry, and they called this place home for several years.
Those were tough times. She’d seen the cold side of human nature and endured loads of grievances.
There were only a few who were nice to her.
Besides Edith, her grandma’s old pal, and Fiona, there were also Mason and Gwen, her childhood buddies, and of course, Hugh.

Bethan recalled that after their wedding was set, Hugh would come to see her almost every night.
They’d hide behind this very tree, hugging and smooching. Sometimes, unable to resist his charm, she’d let him carry her to the car.
Most of the time, Hugh was a gentleman. He’d take her to their future home and bring her back a few hours later.
Even though Hugh didn’t love her, they were the envy of many back then.

As night fell, Bethan wandered along the long street near the school gate, where the ground was carpeted with a thick layer of fallen leaves.
She stopped to watch a young couple having a spat by the roadside with keen interest.
When darkness fully enveloped the city, she made her way to the downtown night market.
At a pasta joint on the street corner, she ordered a plate of
spaghetti.

Choking back sobs, Bethan pushed the plate away and got up to leave.
Late at night, she stood at the crossroads, not budging even after the traffic light had turned green several times.
Watching a young lad piggybacking a girl across the road, she heard the voice of her younger self. “Huggie, carry me.”
On the boy’s back, the girl chattered nonstop, and the boy, pretending to be annoyed, told her to hold on tight so she wouldn’t tumble off.
Not far behind Bethan, Arthur and Barry were still tailing her.
Barry, fidgeting nervously, said, “Arthur, do you think Bethan’s okay?”
Arthur, clutching the blanket and keeping a close eye on Bethan in the distance, replied, “Let her blow off some steam. She’ll head home when she’s tired.”
“You reckon she still can’t get over him?” Barry asked.
Scratching his head, Arthur said, “He’s gone. She’s gotta move on. Bethan is 27 and has known Mr. Cavill for as long as she can remember. Their bond was strong. She just needs time.”

After taking Mason’s call, his face went as white as a sheet.
Hanging up, he grabbed Barry and dashed towards the crossroads.
Startled, Bethan asked, “What are you guys doing here?”
Arthur wrapped the blanket around Bethan and relayed Mason’s message, “Mason tried to call you, but you didn’t pick up. He said Sir Cavill took a lethal dose of pills and passed away. Mrs. Fiona Cavill fainted for the third time and is still out cold. He asked if you could head over.”
Bethan stood there, stunned, taking ages to snap out of it.
“Mr. Locke, drive me home so I can change,” she said.
Back home, she changed into black.
Barry picked up his coat and was about to tag along. “Bethan, the Cavill family’s had a double whammy in two days. They’re bound to be emotional. I’ll go with you,” he said.
Bethan shook her head, took the coat from Barry’s hand, and put it back on the sofa.
Looking solemn, she said, “Don’t worry about me. No matter

Bethan.
Eventually, due to Arthur’s insistence, Bethan went to the Cavill Manor with him.
It was the wee hours of the morning.
The gates of the Cavill Manor stood wide open as Arthur’s car rolled in slowly.
Bethan stepped out of the car, and Mason was already there to greet her.
After not seeing each other for a day and a night, Mason looked haggard and exhausted.
He told Bethan, “Members of the main branches of the Cavill family and the Kroos family are all here. The rest will arrive tomorrow morning. Mr. Ryan Cavill and Mrs. Fiona Cavill are in a bad state, and Gwen can hardly hold on. That’s why I called you.”
Bethan nodded but didn’t say a word.
Silently, she followed Mason.
The sky was pitch-black at that pre-dawn hour, but the
