Chapter 387 Why
Right now, stalling was her only play.
Bethan calmed her parents down, saying she needed more time to think about marrying Hugh.
Then she persuaded them to auction off the jewelry set to pay off the debt to Hugh and cut all ties with him.
Once Bethan’s parents learned of their daughter’s plan, they quickly got the jewelry and gave it to her.
Deeply moved, Bethan realized that in both her past and present lives, her parents had always been her rock.
With the jewelry in hand, she decided to find Tristen. She hoped he could arrange to send the jewelry to an auction house.
That way, she could pay Hugh back fast and move her parents and little brother out of Hugh’s place.
She also planned to ask Tristen to get her a job at the Dixon family’s hospital to start her career.
Using her past-life skills, she was sure she could make a name for herself in sleep disorders to get involved with Hugh again.or waste time on others.
She was going to work hard in her field and bring back the Olsen family’s former glory on her own.
As night fell and it was time for dinner at the Cavill Manor, Fiona had the kitchen whip up a delicious meal.
The family was in the living room, waiting for Bethan and Hugh to come back from getting married.
But only Hugh showed up.
Quietly, Hugh walked into the living room and plopped down on the sofa across from his parents.
Fiona stood up and asked, “Was it busy at the City Hall today?
“Why are you alone? Where’s Bethy?”
Hugh stared at the fruit bowl on the coffee table and mumbled, “We didn’t get the license.”
Fiona immediately thought they’d had a fight.
Pointing at Hugh, she scolded, “Did you mess up with Bethy?
What happened?”
“We got held up casually.
He’d been scratching his head, trying to figure out why Bethan suddenly didn’t want to get married.
In his past life, he’d treated her terribly and never gotten her forgiveness before he died.
If Bethan had been reborn, too, with her blunt personality, she would’ve told him straight up and split.
There had to be another reason.
Ryan pointed at Hugh and lectured, “You’re the one who wanted this marriage. You were so keen on marrying that girl. The house after your marriage is ready, and everyone knows you’re getting hitched at the end of the month. You two better fix this!”
Hugh said firmly, “I don’t want that house. Bethy and I will live in the Blue Bay Community after we’re married.”
Whether Bethan remembered their past lives or not, he wouldn’t go near that house.
Since Megan and her son had been there, Bethan thought it was dirty.
It gets dark a bit late in summer.
It was just past eight when Hugh reached Bethan’s place, and the sky had just turned dark.
Barry, in slippers, shorts, and a tank top, with a crew cut, opened the door.
Seeing Hugh, he happily greeted, “Hugh.”
Hugh’s eyes landed on the plaster on Barry’s ankle. He bent down to check the ligament.
Hugh reminded him, “Weak leg strength can lead to ligament injuries. Don’t rush things.”
As they were talking, Bethan’s parents came over and invited Hugh into the living room.
Scanning the living room, Hugh couldn’t spot Bethan. Before he realized it, his feet had carried him to Bethan’s bedroom door.
There, Barry knocked on the door and called out, “Bethan, open up.”
The moment the door opened and Bethan saw Hugh, she instinctively spun around to retreat into the room.
“Bethy.” Hugh quickly reached out to stop the door from closing.
Something seemed off to Bethan’s parents, who exchanged worried looks.
Miranda then advised her daughter, saying, “Sit down and have a good talk. Don’t bottle it all up, and no fighting, okay?”
Seeing that Bethan wasn’t going to let him in, Hugh said, “It’s still early. Go for a walk?”
