Chapter 403 Who Could That Person Be
Hugh lazily lifted his eyes to give Mason a quick look. “Aunt Melissa thinks she’s got a great catch for Gwen. She’s thinking of sending Gwen over to study so they can spend some time together,” he drawled.
Mason’s features contorted in dismay. “Gwen’s just twenty! There’s no need to rush this, is there?”
“The good ones go fast. It’s smart to start looking for someone for her early.” Hugh shrugged.
Mason fell silent.
Sighing, Hugh rose to his feet. “I always thought that with how close you two are, you’d be the one for her. My bad,” he said with a shake of his head.
In Hugh’s past life, Mason had clearly been smitten with his sister.
But after the rebirth, even Bethan’s feelings towards him had shifted. Who knew about others?
As Hugh made his way out, Mason followed him to the door, looking a bit glum.
Once outside, Mason muttered under his breath, “I was planning to wait till Gwen graduated to make my move. Why the hurry?”
Hugh stopped short and turned around.
Instantly, Mason was met with Hugh’s rather mischievous grin and instinctively took a couple of steps back.
Hugh clapped him on the shoulder. “Come on, man! You’ve got this!”
Mason felt like he’d stepped into a parallel universe. “What the…”
Stepping out of Mason’s house, Hugh felt a sense of light-heartedness.
If it isn’t Mason, then who on earth could “that person” be?
Bethan had a wide circle of contacts, but she was just a fresh-faced twenty-something graduate.
Not long ago, she’d sold her jewels and smoothly landed a job at the Dixon family’s private hospital, all thanks to Tristen pulling some strings.
A really great guy?
Haven’t confessed yet?
Can’t disclose the identity?
Could it be Tristen?
A few days later, Fiona brought Hugh and Gwen to the hospital to visit an elderly relative.
In the corridor, they ran into Bethan and Tristen.
Hugh came to a halt, his eyes fixed on Bethan. She was in a crisp white coat, her ponytail swaying as she walked side by side with Tristen down the corridor.
His intense eyes lingered on her perfectly made-up face.
He’d known Bethan since they were kids, and she’d always been a natural beauty in his eyes, never bothering with makeup.
He suddenly thought that girls primp for the dudes they love.
Gwen beamed and walked up to Bethan. “Hey, Bethan!”
Bethan and Tristen approached politely to say hello.
Sensing Hugh’s piercing gaze, Bethan took the initiative to greet them.
Fiona glanced back at her son and sighed. She then told 3/7
Bethan, “Bethy, I’ve got some business here. Join us for lunch.”
Hugh locked his gaze on Bethan. Then, turning to the waiter, he said, “Same as hers, please.”
Over the meal, Hugh broke the silence. “How’s the hospital internship going?”
The mention of work instantly brightened Bethan’s face. “It’s easy with Tristen around. He’s got my back,” she chirped.
At the mention of Tristen, Hugh’s features tightened.
His fingers instinctively tightened around the knife and fork, and his eyes stayed fixed on Bethan.
Their eyes met, and Bethan felt a shiver run down her spine.
Hugh’s menacing look and the way he was gripping the cutlery made her feel as if he might just explode any second.
Trying to lighten the mood, Bethan cleared her throat and skewered a slice of orange with her fork, placing it on Hugh’s plate. “Have some orange. It’ll calm your nerves,” she suggested.
Hugh wordlessly put down his utensils and stared at the orange for a good while.
Then, he asked, “How well do you know Tristen?”
Bethan was taken aback. “What’s with the question?”
“He was a chubby kid. Probably got it from his grandparents,” he muttered.
Bethan furrowed her brow, struggling to understand Hugh’s cryptic words.
Pointing to her head, she said, “Can you just spell it out? My brain’s not that quick.”
Hugh scowled, his appetite clearly gone. “If you can’t get it, figure it out at home.”
Bethan was left at a loss for words.
