Chapter 404 Tricky One
One lunch, two people with their own agendas.
After exiting the diner, Bethan motioned across the street. “Go do your stuff. I’ll walk back on my own.”
Hugh just shrugged and pointed the same way. “My car’s
parked by the hospital. Come on, let’s walk.”
With a little huff, Bethan fell in beside him, and they meandered off toward the hospital.
When they reached the hospital’s parking lot in front of the outpatient building, Hugh came to a stop. “Hey, Bethy. Get in my car for a minute. Gotta tell you something,” he said.
Bethan was having none of it. “I’ll be late for work. Either spill it or I’m leaving,” she grumbled.
There was just something off about Hugh today, like he was under some weird spell.
Hugh locked his eyes on Bethan’s face, studying her reaction. “Remember that jewelry set you sold at auction? I got it back. It’s in the trunk,” he announced.
Bethan’s eyes widened in surprise. “But I already paid you back. Why’d you go and do that?” she asked, her voiced with confusion
“Thought I’d give it to you,” Hugh replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“No way! I’m not taking it,” Bethan shot back immediately.
She wasn’t about to let herself forget the whole mess.
“You bought it, so it’s yours. I’ll buy it back from you when I’ve scraped up enough cash. Just don’t cheat me with the price,” she added, folding her arms across her chest.
Hugh stared at her, his expression unreadable.
“I’ll hold onto it for you then. Just say the word, and it’s yours,” he offered.
Bethan just rolled her eyes internally.
She knew what was more important-her life, not some fancy jewelry.
Not wanting to push the issue, Hugh let it drop.
Then, he stepped closer. “I’m flying out to Australia in a couple of days. Finished the incense and that medicine you made. Can you make another batch?” he asked, giving her a hopeful look. hospita
Bethan hesitated. “You can make an appointment at the hospital tomorrow,” she said, trying to keep things proper.
Hugh shook his head. “Nah, just make it, and I’ll come by to grab it. No need for all the appointment hassle,” he insisted.
Seeing Bethan still wavering, he played his trump card. “You always say we’re like brother and sister, right? Well, your brother here is having trouble sleeping and got these terrible headaches. You gonna just leave me hanging?”
Bethan couldn’t argue with that.
She knew Hugh was a tricky one, but she hadn’t expected him to twist her own words around like this.
Reluctantly, she gave in. “Fine. Come by the hospital tomorrow morning,” she sighed.
True to his word, Hugh showed up at the hospital the next morning, carrying a bag of homemade granola bars-Fiona’s special recipe.
There, by the entrance, he bumped into Tristen. “Mr. Dixon.” Hugh greeted with a friendly smile. “Thanks for keeping an eye on my fiancée.”
Tristen looked a bit taken aback. “I thought you two called off the engagement?” he asked, his brows furrowing in confusion.

A few days later, over at the Cavill Manor one afternoon, Harvey was sitting in the living room with Hugh’s parents.
The atmosphere was as heavy as lead.
Logan walked in and laid out the findings of his investigation. “The whereabouts of Megan and her son have been tracked. They’re staying in Canada and haven’t budged an inch. Meanwhile, Mr. Cavill is swamped with business in Australia, so there’s no way they’ve crossed paths.”
“Look, until Hugh ties the knot, we can’t afford to slack off. Keep your eyes peeled.” Harvey gave a satisfied nod. 5/7
Ryan spoke up in agreement, “You’re spot-on, Dad. We can’t have someone like Megan waltzing into the family as our heir’s wife.”
Sitting by Ryan’s side, Fiona couldn’t help but furrow her brows in confusion.
Hugh had been stubborn, brushing off both marriage and engagement. Could it be that Megan wasn’t the root of the problem?
Harvey, looking straight at Fiona, issued an order. “When Hugh gets back from his trip, organize a little get-together. Invite Mrs. Potter and Ms. Potter over. You should start getting along with them. It’ll do the family some good.”
Fiona caught the drift and simply replied, “I’ll give it my best shot.”
But deep down, she had no intention of following Harvey’s orders to the letter.
Alina was young, but she had a set of claws and more ambition than she knew what to do with.
She was cut out for the boardroom, not the wedding chapel.
Besides, lately, Hugh had started showing real interest in Bethan. As his mother, she could read the signs as clear as day. 6/7
