Chapter 410 What a Joke
Outside the stall, Bethan smiled in satisfaction as she noticed Nola and Jasper hadn’t emerged yet.
After that, they made their way back to the car.
Hugh, wearing a cautious look, broached the subject. “You still haven’t told me if we can celebrate our birthdays together this year.”
Their gazes met, and Bethan gave a firm nod.
“No worries. We’ll do it together, like always.”
Hugh smiled while Bethan calmly fastened her seatbelt. She was scheming to come back later and stir things up even more.
She was certain that by the time of their birthday party, a “big surprise” would be in store.
Upon arriving home, Bethan immediately plugged her phone. in to charge.
And without delay, she transferred all the money for the seafood they’d bought to Hugh.
Hugh fixated on the transfer notification on his phone, his qxpression turning a bit gloomy.
Looking up, he questioned Bethan, “Do we really have to be so strict about the money? It’s no big deal.”
Bethan stood her ground. “Come on, I only asked you to pay because I forgot my wallet. I can’t just let it slide like that.”
Hugh lowered his head, disguising the emotions in his eyes. His heart was pounding erratically.
Usually, Bethan would take things from him without a second thought, and she’d never kept track of things this clearly with him before.
His mind in a muddle, Hugh’s face paled.
Bethan chose to ignore his troubled expression.
She said, “You know, you really helped my parents a lot when they were buying the house. Got them a great deal and saved a bundle.”
Then, her tone shifted. “But what your grandpa and dad blurted out yesterday? It really hit me and my family hard. I could’ve sued them for slander, but I held back for your sake. Think of the money you saved on the house as payback for the mental pain they caused.”
Hugh remained in front of Bethan, yearning to get closer but hesitant, afraid of pushing her away.
In a tender voice, he asked, “We were having a great time at the market. What happened? Why are you suddenly acting so distant?”
Bethan couldn’t reveal her true thoughts.
She softened her tone a bit. “Hugh, I’m not mad at you, okay? But there’s a huge gap between our worlds. Maybe it’s better if we keep some space between us.”
Hugh stared at her blankly, then suddenly seized her hands.
With a serious look, he declared, “Bethy, if I ditch my claim to be the Cavill family heir and become an ordinary person, would you give us another shot?”
They were face-to-face, hardly an inch apart.
Bethan tugged at her hands, but Hugh’s grip tightened.
Frustrated, she exclaimed, “You know better than anyone how your grandpa and dad are. If you give up the inheritance for me, they’ll come after me like sharks!
“Even with all your power now, you can’t fully break free from them. If you become a regular guy, we’ll both be sitting ducks. They’ll do whatever they want with us.”
Hugh’s intense gaze remained fixed on Bethan, and gradually, he released his hold.
In this situation, it seemed their relationship could only go downhill.
One hand held the cigarette, while the other rested casually on the steering wheel as he let the cold breeze blow in through the open window.
His mind seemed a million miles away, his eyes darting around restlessly, a hint of unease in his expression.
Suddenly, the shrill ringtone of his phone jolted Hugh back to reality.
Glancing at the caller ID, he started the engine and drove off.
Over an hour later, he pulled up at the Cavill Manor.
As soon as he stepped inside, Ryan’s angry voice boomed through the living room, “What the hell were you doing at the Olsen family’s place instead of staying home with your grandpa this weekend?”
Hugh’s eyes narrowed. “Were you spying on me, Dad?”
Ryan ignored the question. “That family has been down on their luck for ages. They’re so damn cheap.”
“Come on, Dad, cut it out!” Hugh snapped, “The Olsens haven’t done anything to you.”
The tension in the room was palpable as the two men squared off against each other.
Harvey sat quietly on the sofa, observing the scene, while Fiona rushed over to Hugh, a look of concern on her face.
Ryan, his face flushed with anger, pointed an accusing finger at Hugh. “Am I wrong? Look at them. The three of them couldn’t even afford the bill for the dinner I ordered last night. Why are you slumming it with them? Have you lost your marbles?”
Hugh stepped forward, his voice firm. “Remember, it was you guys who invited them over. You never had any intention of letting them enjoy the meal, did you?”
However, Ryan let out a contemptuous snort. “Do they even deserve it?”
That was the final straw for Hugh. His temper flared, and he lashed out. “They don’t deserve it, but you do? What a joke!”
