Chapter 42 She Won’t Really Leave Me
Mason stopped Hugh from opening a third bottle of wine. “Once you show that paternity test to your grandpa, even if it’s fake, it’ll seem real. Then Megan and her son will start demanding a proper place in the family. I wonder how you’re gonna deal with that.”
Hugh leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and looking utterly exhausted.
His voice was deep, laced with indescribable irritation. “If I don’t do this, with Grandpa’s temper, he won’t let Megan and her son off. Megan’s life has been ruined because of me. I can’t let anything happen to them. I owe her this.
“Besides, Megan isn’t that kind of person. I trust her. She promised me that once she recovers, she’ll let me find a school far away for her son and try not to disrupt my life with Bethan.”
Mason mercilessly debunked his words. “Hugh, morals can’t hold you back. There are plenty of ways to compensate her, but you picked the one that hurts everyone. You still have feelings for Megan, and you resent your grandfather for splitting you up back then. I get your feelings, but I can’t understand why you’re hurting Bethan like this.
“If Bethan has done anything wrong, it’s loving you too deeply. If you still can’t let go of Megan, just let Bethan go and be step-dad.”
Hugh retorted, “I’ll definitely help Megan and her son to the end, and I’m not getting a divorce.”
Mason tried to persuade Hugh. “IIugh, don’t be mad at what I’m saying. You and Bethan should get divorced. I feel so sorry for her.”
Hugh glanced up at Mason. “She’s my wife. You don’t need to pity her.”
Mason shrugged. “Dude, don’t be so confident. Bethan sees you as her salvation, but you’re pushing her into hell. She’ll leave you sooner or later.”
Hugh threw his head back and gulped down a large mouthful of wine. “She’s acting up because of what I said. She’s loved me for so many years. She won’t really leave me.”
Mason stared at Hugh in disbelief. “Why will she still hold on to you?
“Is it that you lied to her about being on a business trip when you were actually off with your first love and her kid?
“Or maybe it’s that anniversary gift you gave her, the exact same one you also got for your first love?
“Could it be that you’re a married man but often stay out all night?
“What about the time when she was sick, and you left her alone while you played the doting husband at your first love’s hospital bedside?
“Or is it about you acting like a father figure to someone else’s kid, using your joint savings with your wife to buy your first love a mansion, a fancy car, and even hiring a driver and servants for her?”
Hugh was speechless and kept guzzling the wine.
Mason summed it up. “Hugh, you’re being such a jerk. You’ll regret it.”
Just then, Hugh’s phone on the coffee table started to vibrate.
Hugh glanced at the phone, grabbed his coat, and was about to leave.
On the sofa, the three of them sat side by side, with Bethan nestled in the middle.
Mason had come with the intention of persuading Bethan.
However, the sight of her haggard, worn-out face tugged at his heartstrings. Leaning in a bit, he said in a soft, earnest tone, “Bethan, listen up. If you’ve got the fight in you, go for it. But if it’s just too much, then it might be time to call it quits and get that divorce.”
Gwen leaned back on the seat and shot Mason a warning look.
She, too, believed Hugh didn’t deserve Bethan’s love, and hoped Bethan would break free from this painful relationship.
However, Hugh was still her brother.
There was a tiny bit of selfishness in her. Secretly, she hoped Bethan wouldn’t divorce Hugh.
But it definitely wouldn’t do to let Bethan keep bottling up her anger like this.
Gwen said, “Bethan, no matter what you decide, I’m on your side. Even if you divorce Hugh, my grandpa, my parents, and I will never let that woman and her kid into the Cavill family.”
