Chapter 43 Don’t Touch Me
But it definitely wouldn’t do to let Bethan keep bottling up anger like this.
Gwen said, “Bethan, no matter what you decide, I’m on your side. Even if you divorce Hugh, my grandpa, my parents, and I will never let that woman and her kid into the Cavill family.”
Bethan gave Gwen a grateful look. Then, she curled her legs up and wrapped her arms around her knees.
Hugh’s heart-wrenching words kept echoing in her head, torturing her so much that she even contemplated ending her life.
“Bethan, how about lending me a billion dollars? I’ll get divorced and pay you back in installments later,” Bethan said to Mason.
Mason was taken aback. “What kind of divorce costs a billion dollars?”
Gwen’s eyes nearly popped out. “Bethan, is Hugh…”
Bethan buried her head in her arms and mumbled, “Back then, my family went bankrupt and owed a huge debt, and it was he who paid it off. He’s been supporting my parents and my brother all these years. I owe him this.”
Gwen was shocked. She thought Hugh was being calculating with Bethan, forcing her to pay back the money.
If that were the case, he’d be a real jerk.
Mason studied Bethan’s face with his sharp eyes.
He wasn’t as optimistic as Gwen.
“You married Hugh. It was his duty to help your family. You don’t have to pay him back even if you divorce. The years you’ve spent with him can’t be measured by money.”
Bethan hung her head, her expression numb. “I have to pay. Otherwise, I can’t get divorced.”
In Harvey’s study, she’d made her stance clear. There was nothing left to hold back.
Mason got it.
No wonder Hugh was so confident they wouldn’t divorce.
He was using money to force Bethan into submission.
Mason had the money, but he couldn’t lend it.
Hugh was holding this over Bethan. If he stepped in, Hugh might cause trouble for his vacation resort, and their families would end up at odds.
As a result, Mason looked troubled.
Bethan didn’t want to put him in a tough spot. “Mason, I was just kidding. I know Hugh’s temper. I won’t let you fall out with him because of me. I’ll figure out the money on my own.”
Mason tried to make it up. “Have you had lunch? There’s a new French joint downtown. I’ll take you there.”
Bethan wasn’t in the mood. “Gwen, you go with Mason. I’m not hungry.”
Gwen refused to leave, saying, “If you’re not hungry, neither am I.”
Mason said, “How about going out for a walk? Staying at home all day isn’t good for you.”
After a moment’s thought, Bethan agreed.
She really needed to get out and clear her head.
After a quick freshen-up, Bethan changed her clothes, slipped on a pair of flat shoes, and went out with Gwen and Mason.
