Chapter 45 Regretting Marrying Hugh
All she could think about were the hurtful words Hugh had said in the study at Cavill Manor.
He’d firmly told his family that the woman he wanted and had always loved was Megan, not her.
He’d said his happiness was ruined, that the kid was his flesh and blood, and that he’d take responsibility for Megan and her kid.
Bethan clutched her head in pain
Before getting married, she’d heard people say marriage was a grave.
She’d always smiled and said that as long as she could marry Hugh, marriage would be her home.
But now, looking back, she realized how naive she’d been.
This marriage with Hugh had buried not only her youth but also her pride and self-esteem.
All she’d ever wanted was a simple marriage with just the two of them.
What she yearned for in a husband wasn’t someone extraordinary. Instead, she hoped for a man who was morally and physically spotless, completely devoted to her.
Yet Hugh? His soul was soiled, and his body was far from clean.
No matter how much she’d liked and loved him before, Bethan didn’t want him anymore.
Crying, Bethan picked up her phone and called her father, Vincent.
On the phone, Bethan fought back her sobs, her voice quivering. “Dad, I wanna come home.”
“Where are you, honey?” was all Vincent asked on the other end. After Bethan told him the address, he hung up.
Gwen sensed that Bethan was serious this time.
She quickly called Fiona and asked her to come over.
Sitting by the hospital bed, Gwen gently took Bethan’s hand and asked cautiously, “Bethan, are you regretting marrying Hugh?”
Bethan squeezed Gwen’s hand tightly, her eyelashes fluttering wildly. “Yeah, I do. And I just can’t deal with how things have ended up.”
Outside the ward, Hugh’s fingers on the doorknob were shaking so badly.
It was the first time he’d heard Bethan say the word “regret.”
Mason noticed Hugh’s panicked look and pushed the ward door open.
Hugh walked up to the bed, his deep-set eyes fixed on Bethan.
Gwen rushed over in a hurry. “Hugh, Bethan called her parents. I’ve also called Mom over.”
Hugh hesitated for a moment, then sat down beside the bed.
Leaning over Bethan with one hand propped on the bed, he looked into her eyes. “I know you’re mad, but let’s sort this out between us. Don’t let the elders worry, okay?”
