Chapter 50 Won’t Trust Me
And he’d been quick to fulfill her requests these days.
Megan could tell Hugh still had feelings for her.
But until Hugh divorced, she couldn’t be too forward. Instead, she’d use the child as a bargaining chip.
She was sure that if she didn’t give up, they’d get back together someday.
With that thought in mind, Megan started planning her next move.
The next day at noon, with Hugh out, Bethan made her way back to their marital home.
She’d left in a rush from the hospital and hadn’t had a chance to gather her things.
Once inside, Bethan swiftly packed a small suitcase and got rid of all the items she no longer needed.
In the bathroom, she stumbled upon a supermarket shopping bag stuffed with daily essentials: toothbrushes in matching styles but different colors, mugs, towels, and slippers.
She stuffed them back into the bag.
It must’ve been what Hugh picked up at the supermarket before taking her to Cavill Manor.
After overhearing what he said in the study and then the constant talk of divorce, he never got to use them.
Bethan forced a wry smile.
Moving on to the study, she saw the paternity test report on the desk.
It stated clearly: [Father, Hugh Cavill; Son, Hudson Ridley.]
The probability of paternity was 99.999%, confirming a biological father-son relationship with the official seal of an authoritative institution in the bottom-right corner.
Holding the report, Bethan felt as if it were a ton of bricks in her hands. Her hands shook, and her legs turned to jelly.
“Hudson,” she murmured.
This child was a symbol of their love.
Fighting back the tears and the stabbing pain in her heart, she took out her phone and snapped a photo.
Then, she placed the newly-written divorce agreement beside the paternity test report on Hugh’s desk.
After a refreshing shower and slipping into his pajamas, Hugh made his way to the study. As soon as he stepped in, his eyes landed on the divorce agreement lying on the desk.
He reached for the paternity test report, gently running his fingertips over the faint wrinkles, evidence of dried-up tears.
Wearily, he sank into the chair at the desk, his mind wandering to Bethan’s reaction upon seeing this report. A pang of pain shot through his heart.
Unable to catch a wink of sleep, Hugh changed his clothes, grabbed the paternity test report and his car keys, and headed downstairs.
At one in the morning, he pulled up at the entrance of the resettlement community where Bethan’s parents lived.
After parking by the roadside, he rolled down the window and lit a cigarette, staring silently at the window on the fourth floor across the road.
With a cigarette in one hand and the paternity test report tightly clutched in the other, he weighed his options, uncertainty flickering in his eyes.
Just then, Mason opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat.
He followed Hugh’s gaze across the road. “You can’t ditch Megan and her son for Bethan, and you’re too chicken to tell Bethan this paternity test is fake. What’s the point of coming here?”
Hugh looked away silently, flicking the cigarette butt out of the window. “Bethan’s just mad right now,” he said.
Mason scoffed, “You think Bethan’s gonna put up with you being all lovey-dovey with Megan and her kid after she cools off?”
Hugh replied, “I’ll clear things up with her.”
Mason thought Hugh had lost his mind.
After Mason left, Hugh didn’t drive away immediately.
As dawn broke, he sent a message to Bethan and then headed back to Cavill Manor.
