Chapter 52 You’re Just Not Good Enough
She figured it was because her sudden reappearance had messed up his married life.
Hugh was the heir to the Cavill Group, and his marriage was well-known. For the sake of the Cavill family and the company, he couldn’t afford a scandal like a divorce and an affair.
Thankfully, she’d planned ahead. Right after they reunited, she’d played on Hugh’s guilt and got him to promise to take care of her and their son.
She trusted his character.
Once he gave his word, he’d keep it.
Now, Bethan was already threatening divorce even before she’d really done anything.
Come September, when her son started school and she settled in New York, she’d have more reasons to ask Hugh for help.
Megan was sure Bethan wouldn’t be able to take it.
“Excuse me, are you Ms. Ridley?” A polite voice jolted Megan out of her thoughts.
She eyed the middle-aged man warily. “Do I know you, sir?”
Logan, with his hands folded in front of him, calmly replied, “I’m Logan Wesley, the butler of the Cavill family. Mrs. Fiona Cavill is in the coffee shop across the road and wants to meet you.”
As she realized he was from the Cavill family, Megan’s attitude changed right away. “Thanks, Mr. Wesley. Lead the way.”
As Megan followed Logan across the road, her heart pounded with excitement.
Six years ago, the Cavill family elders had looked down on her and refused to see her.
She’d tried to meet Fiona several times, hoping for her blessing for her relationship with Hugh, but each time, Fiona had sent her away through the servants.
She guessed Hugh must have shown the fake paternity test to the family.
Fiona’s sudden invitation probably meant she wanted to see her “grandson” or was trying to get on their good side.
Upon entering the coffee shop, Megan spotted Fiona where Logan indicated.
The woman carried herself with an air of wealth and refinement in every move and her choice of clothes.
Megan quickly pulled herself together and walked up to Fiona as gracefully as she could. “Hi, Mrs. Fiona Cavill. I’m Megan Ridley.”
Fiona stirred her coffee elegantly, her eyes fixed on the swirling coffee in the cup. “Take a seat.”
Megan sat down, and the waiter handed her the menu. Fiona motioned for Megan to order.
Fiona propped her elbows on the table and rested her chin on her folded hands.
With perfect manners and a gentle tone, she said, “You’re just not good enough.”
Megan’s face instantly darkened. “Why?”
Fiona replied, “Asking that is like wondering why this New York restaurant only has a German menu, no English one.”
Megan felt a bit clammy. “Mrs. Fiona Cavill, I really don’t get it.”
Fiona patiently explained, “That little German menu is to screen customers, just like lots of places need a capital check to get in.”
Megan finally got it.
Fiona was subtly dissing her for her low-class background. Even if she forced her way into the rich folks’ circle, she’d just be a joke.
She gritted her teeth and said, “Mrs. Fiona Cavill, Hugh’s your son. Don’t you want to see him happy?”
Fiona put down her hands and leaned back in the chair. “Ms. Ridley, you can’t have it all. Six years ago, when you took 60 million dollars from Hugh’s grandfather and went abroad, you lost the right to marry into our family. Even if my son gets divorced someday, it won’t be you and your son joining the Cavill family.”
Megan’s gaze was evasive. “Mrs. Fiona Cavill, I did that for Hugh’s future. If Sir Cavill really kicked Hugh out penniless, gave the inheritance to that illegitimate son, and let him struggle on his own from scratch outside, you wouldn’t be okay with it, either.”
