Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 60

Chapter 60 Remember Your Place

She curled into his chest, still crying.

Without a word, Hugh bent down and picked her up. As he

carried her into the elevator, he turned his head one last time to look at Bethan.

Bethan stood frozen on the spot, watching as Hugh walked away -carrying the woman he truly loved in his arms.

She ignored the sharp sting in her chest and pushed up her sleeve. Red welts lined her arm where Megan’s nails had dug into her skin.

Wiping away her tears, she pulled out a compact and touched up her makeup. Then, she headed upstairs to meet Gabriel.

She was going to sell the jewelry. She was going to divorce Hugh.

She wasn’t willing to wait another second.

At the same time, Hugh helped Megan upstairs. The nanny rushed over to apply ointment to the scrape on Megan’s knee.

Sitting on the couch, Megan sobbed uncontrollably, “Hugh, I didn’t think your wife would find me here. She said this apartment belongs to both of you and told me to move out-to

return the place to her.

“No matter how I tried to explain, she wouldn’t listen. She accused me of being a homewrecker. Said she fought so hard to marry you, and no matter what, she’d never agree to a divorce. She said she’d make sure Hudson stays a bastard for life.

“I told her we were over years ago that I only came back for the sake of our child, and I wouldn’t interfere with your marriage. But she wouldn’t believe me. She hit me, Hugh. She said she’d make me and our son disappear.”

Megan noticed Hugh zoning out.

She stood, tears streaming as she grabbed his arm. “Hugh, I’m scared. What are we going to do?”

Hugh blinked back to attention and subtly pulled his arm away. “Don’t worry. As long as I’m here. New York will always have a place for the two of you.”

After a few more words of comfort, Hugh left.

He was certain Bethan didn’t really want a divorce.

This whole thing-one moment soft, the next moment ruthless- even pawning off her mother’s jewelry to force the issue… it was all a test.

That evening, a little past 8 p.m., Bethan sat curled up on her bed, staring blankly at the ceiling

Her phone vibrated over and over on the mattress.

She glanced at the screen-Hugh. Without hesitation, she declined the call.

A moment later, a message popped up.

Hugh texted: [I’m giving you five minutes. If you don’t come down, I’ll come up and get you.]

Bethan hesitated, listening to the sounds of the television in the living room.

Her parents had taken such tender care of her since she moved back home-never once complaining.

But she knew how much it weighed on them.

She wouldn’t let Hugh barge into their home and bring more

tension.

Making an excuse to buy a drink, she slipped out and crossed the street outside their apartment complex.

A car window lowered. “Get in,” Hugh said flatly.

Bethan hesitated, then walked around to the passenger seat. She opened the door and sat down. “Whatever it is, say it quickly.”

Hugh’s eyes locked onto her cold, detached expression.

His first words were an accusation. “Didn’t you want a divorce? Then why are you harassing Megan?”

Bethan didn’t have the energy to argue. “Give me the divorce, and I won’t bother her again. That’s my promise.”

Hugh’s voice darkened. “And if I don’t?”

Bethan’s tone didn’t waver. “Then anything I do to her and the child is within my rights.”

His expression hardened. Gone was the indulgent tone he used weeks ago. “Megan and her son may be at a disadvantage, and they may not be able to fight back, but they have me. And no matter what happens, I’ll take full responsibility for them.”
