Chapter 63 I Should Step Aside
Is this Bethan’s way of taking revenge?
Lucky Draw
Bethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the mountain of discarded furniture in the yard. Her voice was calm. “Ms. Ridley, I’m here to give you what you want. You can have Hugh.”
Megan’s expression flickered, surprise and suspicion flickering in her eyes. “If you really meant that,” she said carefully, “you would’ve done this a long time ago. Why now?”
For once, she didn’t know how to react.
Bethan turned to face her, taking in the empty shell of the house that used to hold her dreams. “I’ve known Hugh since we were kids. I won’t deny that I loved him,” she said, her voice steady. “But the truth is, he doesn’t love me. He loves you.”
Megan’s eyes widened slightly, and she tried to mask the glimmer of excitement threatening to break through. She spoke hesitantly, “Ms. Olsen, are you saying you’re really going to step aside? For us?”
Bethan nodded without hesitation. “I’ve known Hugh for over twenty years. He’s not the kind of man who lies. But for you, he lied to me. He stayed away from home for a month without explanation, just to be with you.”

Megan looked away, trying to hide her guilt. “I told him he should go back,” she murmured. But he said it had been too long since he last saw me, and well…”
She didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t have to. It hurt more
that way.
Bethan let out a soft, bitter laugh. “No need to explain, Ms. Ridley. He didn’t keep it a secret.
“He told me himself-he said the one he truly wanted to marry was you. Ever since you left, he hasn’t known what happiness was. That marrying me was something he did out of duty, not love.”
Megan pressed her hands to her chest, as if trying to calm her racing heart.
She had always believed that Hugh still had feelings for her. Now, it was confirmed.
Bethan followed her gaze to where Hudson was playing outside in the garden. “I’ve come to terms with it,” she said quietly. “You and Hugh love each other. You even have a child together. I should have stepped aside a long time ago.”
Tears welled in Megan’s eyes. She stepped forward and grabbed Bethan’s hands. “Ms. Olsen, thank you. Thank you for choosing to let us be together.”

Bethan calmly pulled her hand back. “This was our marital home,” she said. “The walk-in closet and study still have some of Hugh’s valuables. I didn’t touch those. But everything else I could tear down, I did.”
She looked Megan in the eye and added, “I already scheduled a renovation team for you. Pick whatever style you want. I’ll cover the cost. Consider it a wedding gift.”
She paused, then added, “I don’t really have anything suitable for your son, so I cleared out the music room on the second floor. I had the designer draw up plans for a child’s bedroom instead. Think of it as a gift to him.”
Megan’s face lit up. She immediately pulled her little boy over. “Hudson, say thank you.”
Hudson, wide-eyed and innocent, said in his sweet voice, “Thank you.”
Bethan ruffled his hair gently, her voice soft. “He’s adorable. No wonder Hugh protects him like he’s the most precious thing in the world.”
Megan’s eyes flickered. She quickly sent the child away.
She looked at Bethan cautiously, then said, “Ms. Olsen, all of this –it’s our fault. Hugh and I… we betrayed you. He’s been stuck in the middle this whole time. I know he’s been in pain too. I don’t even know how to make things right. But thank you

for choosing to let us go.”
Bethan shook her head.
It wasn’t a matter of who was right or wrong. It was only a matter of loving or not.
She had tried-she’d fought for him. But everything had led to one conclusion: Hugh didn’t love her. He never truly belonged to her.
She turned back to Megan. “I arranged for the renovations to be rushed. The contractors will be here first thing tomorrow. Finalize the design choices quickly. Move in before Hugh gets back from his business trip.”
Megan still seemed unsure. “Are you sure about this, Ms.
Olsen?”
Bethan didn’t respond.
Instead, she walked into the garden and stared at the towering pile of debris-memories of her marriage reduced to rubble.
The flashes of their past came rushing back: childhood laughter, teenage crushes, and wedding vows.
She crouched down and lit a small teddy bear on fire.
