Chapter 70 She Has Given You Up
but you
Seeing Hugh silent, Megan pressed on with determination. “Hugh, you’ve been married to Bethan for three years, wouldn’t even buy her sanitary pads when she asked. Yet the moment I called, you rushed to the store yourself and picked out several brands for me to choose from.
“You threatened your grandfather and defied your family for me. You even confessed to Bethan that the woman you want to marry is me, not her.
“You said it yourself-after losing me, you haven’t been happy. You married Bethan only as a second choice, out of necessity. Why won’t you admit you still have feelings for me?”
With every word Megan spoke, Hugh felt his heart sinking deeper. It was like a mountain pressing on his chest, suffocating him.
He whispered, “Did she tell you all this?”
Megan nodded. “If she hadn’t told me, how else would I know?”
Cautiously, Megan reached out and tried to take Hugh’s hand. “Hugh, since she has already let go to make things easier for us, and since we both still can’t let each other go, why don’t we try again?”
She pressed closer, tiptoeing to plant a kiss.

Hugh stood frozen, as if trying to verify something.
Just as her lips were about to touch his, he instinctively pushed her away.
Turning around, he said, “The driver is here. Pack your things and take Hudson home.”
Neither his heart nor his body could accept Megan.
This time, he was even more certain.
What he felt for Megan was nothing but guilt and responsibility. There was no trace of affection left.
Megan staggered back, nearly losing her footing.
Disbelief and hurt filled her voice as she confronted him, “Hugh, I’ve loved you for so many years. I’ve sacrificed so much for you. How can you treat me like this?”
Hugh faced her, his eyes cold and distant.
He said, “Megan, I know you’ve sacrificed a lot and suffered because of me these past six years. That’s why I’ve tried to fulfill your every request. I even faked a paternity test to protect you and your son. I didn’t explain things to Bethan to protect your pride. I neglected her to take care of you both, and it hurt her deeply.”

He continued, “I can try to make it up to you and Hudson as much as possible, but I will never sacrifice my marriage. Do you understand?”
Megan’s emotions broke. Tears streamed down her face as she raised her left hand to show him. ‘Hugh, look at this.”
Hugh’s eyes landed on the wedding ring on Megan’s ring finger, and his expression instantly froze
Realizing what it was, he reached out to take the ring off her finger. “Why is her ring on your hand?”
Megan took a step back, avoiding him. “Hugh, your wife took this ring off herself and gave it to me. Surprised?”
Hugh’s gaze darkened. He stepped forward, gripping Megan’s wrist and forcibly removing the ring.
The sudden pain made Megan cry harder. “Hugh, she has already given you up!”
“Shut up!” Hugh pulled out a tissue and wiped the ring frantically.
Bethan was a neat freak. She never let anyone else touch her things. She would hate this.
His actions only provoked Megan further.

Lucky Draw
Impulsively, she lunged forward and grabbed Hugh. “Hugh, the woman you love is me, not Bethan! Look for yourself-even your wedding rings aren’t a matching pair!”
Hugh pushed her away and slipped the ring into his pocket.
His wedding ring and Bethan’s really weren’t a pair.
He hadn’t even been involved in the wedding preparations. Bethan had handled everything herself.
They had their rings picked out by Jacob.
Jacob had even asked him if he wanted matching bands or just regular diamond rings, and what price range.
Hugh had only replied, “Whatever.”
When Hugh remembered the look of pure joy on Bethan’s face the day he placed the wedding ring on her finger, it felt like something had slammed hard into his chest.
Just then, the driver knocked and entered the room.
Hugh pointed at Megan. “Pack her things. Take her and the child ‘home. Now.”
Without another word, he grabbed the divorce papers and the bank card from the coffee table and headed out.
