Chapter 71 Just Get the Divorce
Minutes passed. There was no reply and no sign of Bethan. Hugh didn’t wait any longer. He got out of the car and headed up to the house.
Inside, Bethan’s parents had just finished a call with Bethan and were getting ready to sleep when someone knocked at the door.
As soon as they saw Hugh, their expressions changed.
Vincent blocked the doorway and didn’t let Hugh in. “Hugh, it’s late. What are you doing here?”
Hugh glanced toward the living room. “I need to speak to Bethan.”
Vincent and Miranda exchanged a quick look.
Miranda spoke up, “Bethy’s gone abroad for further studies. She’s not home.”
The moment Hugh heard that Bethan had left the country, his face fell. “When did it happen?” 1/6

known. A sick feeling twisted in his gut.
Miranda tugged at Vincent’s arm, signaling him to step aside. Then she turned and quietly poured Hugh a glass of water.
Vincent’s tone had grown noticeably colder. “Hugh, it’s been a while since you last came. Now that Bethy’s not here, we might as well say what we’ve been meaning to.”
Hugh sat down across from them, calm and respectful. “Please, say whatever you need to. You don’t need to hold back with me.”
Vincent sighed, “Hugh, you’ve been good to us over the years. The Olsen family owes you a lot. We haven’t forgotten any of it.”
But then his tone shifted. “But Bethy’s been spoiled since she was little. She’s got a bad temper, and she can be dramatic.
“Truthfully, she’s not good enough for you. Now that you’ve found someone else and even have a child with her, Bethy shouldn’t stand in your way. Just get the divorce.”

He forced a small smile, trying to explain, “There are things I can’t explain to you, but whether you believe me or not, I’ve never once considered divorcing Bethan.”
He stood up. “This is a matter between husband and wife. I hope you’ll let us work through it ourselves.”
Miranda, feeling protective of Bethan, couldn’t help but snap, “Hugh, you’re a grown man. Your word should count for something. We already gave you the one billion dollars you asked for. For the sake of Bethan loving you all her life, just stop putting her through this. End the marriage.”
Hugh didn’t address her point directly. “Please, just tell me what country Bethan went to. Where is she staying now?”
Miranda turned her back on him. “Bethan finally stopped crying. I won’t let you hurt her again.”
Vincent walked to the door and opened it. “We’ve said what we needed to say. Go home, Hugh. Think it through, and get the divorce done soon.”

As much as Bethan’s parents resented Hugh for betraying Bethan, they still chose to remain civil. They didn’t lash out. They held it in.
Hugh stood, looking at Miranda’s turned back.
After a long pause, he walked to the door.
Stopping in front of Vincent, he said quietly, “I’m not divorcing Bethan.”
The moment he stepped out, the door shut firmly behind
him.
Hugh stood motionless for a while, staring at the door.
Since he was a boy, every time he came to visit them, Bethan’s parents had welcomed him warmly.
They treated him like a son. They might not have been able to help much when things went wrong, but they always worried about him.
Even recently, when Bethan threatened to divorce him, her parents would still cook for him when he visited. they’d ask about work, offer comfort, and show-ney still3

But this was the first time he had felt their coldness and
their distance.
Back in his car, Hugh called Jacob, “I need you to track Bethan’s movements over the past few days,” he said, voice low and steady. “And find out exactly where she is
now.”

Late at night on the third floor of the Regal Club, Mason pushed open the room door to find Hugh slumped drunk on the couch.
He walked over, leaned down, and checked to see if Hugh was breathing. Hugh swatted his hand away without even opening his eyes. Only then did Mason sit across from him with a bit more ease.
Hugh eventually sat up, rubbing his temples with a look of sheer exhaustion.
Mason dropped the carefree smirk he usually wore. “I just came from your place. Megan and the kid are gone. You’re in no shape to deal with this right now-go home, get some sleep. Bethan didn’t vanish off the face or the1:43
