Hugh took out Bethan’s wedding ring from his pocket, grabbed her wrist, and slipped the ring back on.
Looking into her eyes, he said, “I’ll let you stay here for further studies, but no divorce.”
Bethan yanked her hand back, took off the ring right in front of Hugh, and flung it off the bridge.
Hugh’s heart skipped a beat, and his eyes widened in shock.
He instinctively reached out. “Bethan, no!”
The dazzling sparkle of the diamond flashed in the night sky and then disappeared from their sight.
With the disappearance of the diamond ring, an eerie silence fell upon them.

For dozens of seconds, they just stared into each other’s eyes in silence.
Finally, Hugh snapped out of his shock and grabbed Bethan’s wrist. His face was as gloomy as a storm cloud as he blurted out, “Bethan, that was our wedding ring!”
Bethan yanked her hand back, her eyes steely with determination. “I wish you’d just vanish from my sight, like that ring into thin air!”
Their eyes locked again. Hugh visibly wavered.
There was a mix of shock and panic in his look as he said in a hoarse, strained voice, “You’re serious?”
Bethan kept a straight face as she clearly drew a line. between them. “We’ve known each other since we were kids, over twenty years, and been married for three. I just want a clean break. I’m not being a brat or joking around. I really want a divorce!”
Growing up in a wealthy family, she’d seen plenty of women put up with their husbands’ mistresses and illegitimate kids for the sake of their children, families, and money.

Hugh’s mom was one of them, but she just couldn’t do it.
Hugh’s heart skipped a beat.
His voice quivered as he said, “Even if you want a divorce, you gotta come back to our country with me first.”
She’d always had servants around, even in college. This was the first time she’d traveled this far on her own, and Hugh was really worried sick.
Bethan stared Hugh down. “Don’t think I’m stupid. You’re trying to drag me back and stall the divorce because you’re scared your grandpa will take it out on Megan and her son. You’re doing all this for your precious woman. Stop pretending in front of me!”
Hugh’s expression froze. “Did Gwen tell you that?”
Bethan shot back, “Hugh, I used to love you, but I don’t owe you anything. You’ve no right to use me!”
Hugh stepped forward and grabbed Bethan’s shoulders.
Looking into her eyes, he coaxed gently, “Don’t listen to Réfcrazy talk.”

He’d promised his grandpa not to divorce Bethan for Megan and her son.
But truth be told, he never wanted to divorce Bethan in the first place.
Trying to change the subject and calm Bethan down, Hugh said, “You came all the way here just for a divorce. Have you thought about your folks? Your little brother’s in his rebellious teens, and your parents aren’t getting any younger and aren’t in the best health. They need you around.”
At the mention of her family, Bethan’s emotions welled up. “It’s all your fault!”
Hugh shook his head. “Bethan, I know you ran away to force me to choose between you and Megan, to make me send them packing. But you…

Bethan clung to the edge of the guardrail with both hands. Seeing Hugh coming closer, she let go of one hand. “Stay back!”
Hugh held his hands up in the air and stopped in his tracks.
