Seeing her silence, Mason pressed on. “Hugh did once consider marrying you. He even fought for it. But tell me the truth. Did he ever sleep with you?”

Megan refused to accept that. “Sure, I don’t come from a powerful family, but Bethan’s family went broke. Hugh bailed them out of huge debts. She’s been his wife for three years, but she’s just a housewife, a leech living off him. Tell me, how am I worse than her?”

Mason picked at his ear with his pinky, looking bored, and said offhandedly, “Yes, the Olsen family went bankrupt, but Bethan grew up in elite schools. She’s better educated than you, has broader interests, a wider outlook, and she’s got connections you couldn’t dream of.

“And when she found out about you, she still let you and your kid stay around without dragging you through the mud. That kind of grace is something you’ll never measure up to.”

Then, Mason gave Megan a long once-over before saying, “Bethan’s good looks are famous where we run. Now look at yourself. Is there anything about you worth showing

off?”

It was painfully clear now that not only the Cavill family elders looked down on her, but even Hugh’s friends despised her.

Realizing that, Megan knew she could no longer depend entirely on Hugh. She had to find a job, to stand on her own feet. She needed to carve out her own place beside him, using her own abilities, to break into his circle.

She vowed to make Hugh see that she was a hundred times, ten thousand times better than Bethan.

Megan suddenly thought of that drawing. She quickly puffed out the so-called family portrait, took a photo of it,

A few hours later, in Canada, Bethan returned to the single apartment provided by the hospital and immediately called her parents to let them know she was safe.

Even through the screen, Bethan could feel the weight of Megan’s happiness. It still hurt like hell inside, but at least now she could rein in her emotions. That in itself was a step forward.

When Bethan swiped down to check her notifications, Hugh’s message came into sight, and a faint, bitter smile formed at her lips.

She tossed the phone onto the bed and stepped into the bathroom.
