Lucinda turned to her with a smile, completely unaware of the moment that had just unfolded behind her.
Before Serena could answer, Amber walked in slowly, holding Trevor’s arm like she had all the time in the world.
“Well, Serena. Lucinda. What are the odds of seeing you two here?”
Her voice was soft. Sweet. Fake. Lucinda’s eyes rolled so far back it looked like a reflex.
Fantastic. Just what they needed.
Trevor said nothing. He just kept staring at Serena without blinking.
She had on a soft blush gown. The color made her skin look even paler than usual, but in a warm, glowing way. She rarely wore anything so gentle and delicate.
It knocked the wind out of him. His pulse even sped up.
Amber noticed the shift in him immediately. And it set her off.
She tightened her grip on his arm and leaned in closer. “Trevor, I want to try that lilac over there. It’s perfect for me. Will you get it for me?”

The associate stepped over and looked between the women. “Would you like me to wrap this one up for YOU. THAS?”
Amber’s jaw tightened. Her face twitched. “Yes. Wrap it.”
Lucinda was still annoyed as they left that part of the boutique. “Rena, why did you just give it up like that?!”
Serena smiled. The color’s too bright. I do not really have anywhere I could wear something like that. Plus, it does not suit Amber at all. But if she insists on it, then fine.”
Lucinda scoffed. “Of course it does not! She looks like bland soup. She is too washed out to pull it off. My brother must be completely blind
Then she caught herself.
“Wait–Rena, that is not what I meant. I am not calling you anything. I am saying my brother
is an idiot!”
Serena laughed. “It is fine. Come on. Let’s look around somewhere else. I might have a formal dinner Saturday night. You, my little princess, are coming with me to find a dress.”
On the fifth floor, a boutique with bold interiors and dramatic lighting caught both their
