Serena’s shares had shot up from twenty–five to thirty–five percent, making her the biggest shareholder a Steele Tech.
She didn’t expect Donald to give in so easily. She had planned to take her time and work him over slowly This was almost disappointing.
A cool fingertip scratched lightly against her palm. Serena looked up and caught Sebastian giving her a sl little wink.
He did it on purpose.
He knew everything she had been planning.
If they weren’t in public, she would have dragged him aside and grilled him on how long he’d been onto her.
Back at the dinner table, the mood stayed light. They decided to schedule the wedding for the end of the month.
They left all the planning to Serena and Sebastian. The timeline was tight, but doable.
Sebastian drank a little, so Patrick came to pick them up.
Serena helped him into the backseat. His body leaned against hers, warm and heavy. She couldn’t help asking, “You knew I was trying to get my dad’s shares?”
“Yeah.” Sebastian rested his head in the curve of her neck. His hair brushed her skin with each breath. “Your dad favors the others. He treats you like trash. I’ve seen it all.
“I don’t care if he doesn’t like you. I do.
“I like you more than anyone.”
Serena’s chest tightened. “Sebastian, you’re drunk.”
He straightened suddenly, his sharp features slightly flushed. The alcohol had softened his whole face. “I’m
not.
“Because you’re worth it.”
Her eyes burned. She turned her head, but a tear still slipped past her lashes.
No one had ever said anything like that to her before. Not once.
“Don’t cry.”
His fingers brushed against her cheek. They were warm, but the tips felt cool. He wiped away the tear before it could fall.

He leaned in and kissed her eyelid.
“Don’t cry. If I see you cry, I won’t be able to stop kissing you.”
Serena blinked, too stunned to respond. Had he ever needed an excuse to kiss her?

“Bryce, you gave five percent of your shares to Serena?” Deanna’s voice pitched up, loud and sharp.
Bryce lifted an eyebrow. “What, do I need your permission to give someone a gift now?”
Deanna rushed to explain. “No, I’m not saying that. It’s just—‘
She stomped her heel against the floor. “It just feels way too sudden!”
Her husband was the eldest son. He had worked himself into the ground for the company. Even so, he only had fifteen percent. Their son, the family’s oldest grandson, didn’t even have that.
Sure, they handed him a subsidiary to run. But that didn’t compare to actual shares.
