Yves Clockinton, last season’s golden boy, chuckled. “I heard this season’s batch is even stronger than ours. All ten of them studied abroad.”
Amber leaned forward, her smile perfectly staged. “Seriously? Mr. Clockinton, is it that hard to study law overseas?”
Yves didn’t skip a beat. “Yeah, it’s pretty tough.”
Amber already knew Serena had never studied abroad.
She tilted her head slightly. “Oh, what about that woman from earlier? The one who looked like a senior attorney. Did she go overseas too?”
Winona nearly rolled her eyes. “Beaumont Legal’s one of the top five firms. Anyone working here’s already proven they’ve got what it takes.”
Amber didn’t push. She knew Winona and Serena were close.
Still, she hadn’t expected Winona to show up after taking her spot on the show.
Then she remembered the dinner party. She remembered who backed Winona. Disgust climbed up her throat.
Just a trophy girl. Nothing more.
‘That Amber girl is stunning.‘
‘Winona, you’ve really made it. Didn’t think you’d land a show like this.‘
‘That senior attorney? Gorgeous. I’m smitten.‘
‘Honestly, these women are just talking in circles. Zero substance.”
‘Can we cut back on the observation room? Too many girls this season. It’s giving weird energy. Show the interns more.‘
Serena finished going through the interns‘ profiles and waited for them to arrive.
She sat at reception and guided all ten of them to the main conference room. Once the four mentors had entered, she closed the door quietly and went back to her desk.
She was mainly there as support anyway. After the interviews, they’d roll out the first assessment. That would determine who got paired with whom.
Serena printed out the legal case analysis packet, checked that everything was correct, and moved on to her next task.
While she kept working, Sebastian clearly had nothing on his agenda.
Sebastian texted, “Dinner tonight?”
Serena glanced at the clock. It wasn’t even ten in the morning.
She texted back, “Can’t tonight. I’m working late.”

Sebastian replied, ‘Daniel’s making you stay? I thought we agreed merger cases couldn’t eat into after–hours.‘
Serena stared at the message.
Did he really think all she handled was one case?
She had five trials coming up.
She sent, ‘No, the firm’s filming a live show today. I’ll probably have to stay late.‘
First time she’d said that. Sebastian’s interest was piqued.
Sebastian texted, “What show? Are you on camera?”
