Chapter 255 The Big Day Finally Arrives
Serena let out a soft laugh, a little breathless. “Okay, that’s dramatic, Seb. We’re not even staying in the same room.”
Sebastian only half smiled.
There was something unreadable in his dark eyes as he held her gaze, steady and unblinking Then, his attention drifted, slow and deliberate.
From the bridge of her nose to her mouth, lingering there just a second too long, then sliding lower along the faint flush creeping down her neck, and lower still,
Heat rushed to her cheeks. She lifted her hand and covered his eyes. “What are you looking at?”
“At you.” His palm was warm and dry as he caught her wrist and gently pulled her hand away, tucking it behind his back like she was something he had already claimed. “Honey, from tomorrow night onward, we’re sharing a room.”
The implication hung thick in the air. It was evident and unapologetic.
Serena shoved him toward the door of the Steele residence, flustered beyond words, then spun around and hurried back to her room like she was fleeing a fire.
Sebastian glanced down at his own hand, looking oddly unsatisfied. “She’s this shy,” he muttered to himself, almost amused. “What’s she going to do tomorrow?”
Upstairs, Serena’s thoughts were a tangled mess.
The memory of his gaze still burned against her skin. It had felt like standing too close to an open flame, like she might melt if he kept looking at her that way.
She had no idea how much time passed before her breathing finally became even. Even then, she only lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, turning over and over, sleep refusing to come.
At some point, she drifted up in a haze and shuffled to the window. That was when she noticed it–a faint flicker of firelight behind the artificial rockery in the yard.
Where is that fire coming from?
She threw on a coat and hurried downstairs.

Behind the rockery, Sherry was crouched low.
The firelight painted her face in restless gold and shadow. She looked distant, almost hollow. “Mrs. Steele, Ms. Steele finally found a good man to marry. You don’t have to worry anymore. She’s doing well. Please don’t blame me, okay?
“Yvonne has my child back in my hometown. I didn’t dare expose her. I know you died wronged. I know it wasn’t fair, but please… don’t blame me. Mrs. Steele, I’m lighting this for you. Rest easy.”
