Every subtle arch of her eyebrow and every soft curve of her lips made up the entirety of Sebastian’s universe.

If anything happened to her, everything he lived for would shatter.

“Mr. Levine, p–please don’t panic. Mrs. Levine is going to be alright!” the driver stammered, offering hollow reassurance.

Sebastian’s eyes were rimmed in crimson, his voice steady but dangerously quiet. “She’s going to be okay.”

She has to be okay.

Only yesterday, she had accepted his bouquet, her smile outshining the blossoms in her hands.

There was no way she wouldn’t pull through.

The moment the vehicle screeched to a stop at the hospital entrance, he leapt out as if propelled by a gunshot.

“Where is the woman the ambulance just brought in? Where is she?”

The frantic intensity in his voice startled the medical staff. “W–which patient? What’s her surname?” a nurse asked nervously.

“We couldn’t save the victim from the car accident,” a doctor hurried over to inform them.

Sebastian’s head shifted slowly, his gaze glacial enough to freeze the air. “Repeat that. Who did you say didn’t survive?”

The doctor faltered under his stare. “J–just now, they admitted a young woman. A–are you related to her?”

It felt as if an unseen fist had seized Sebastian’s heart and squeezed mercilessly.

For a second, it seemed all the blood in his veins had stopped flowing.

She’s dead? How is that even possible?

“Mr. Levine!” Patrick called out urgently. “Mrs. Levine is here receiving an IV!”

The man who had felt his world collapse moments ago seemed to breathe again. He snapped his head up and strode quickly toward the room.

Inside the observation ward, she lay asleep, peaceful and unaware. A clean strip of gauze covered the wound on her forehead. “Mr. Levine, they’ve completed a cranial MRI for Mrs. Levine,” Patrick explained, “There’s no serious issue. She just needs rest. The injuries are superficial–no internal bleeding. Mrs. Levine was incredibly fortunate. It could have ended much worse.”

Sebastian answered with a low hum. The coppery tang that had risen to the back of his throat finally faded.

He pulled a chair close to the bed, clasped her uninjured hand, and pressed it against his closed eyes. Had Serena been conscious, she would have felt the warmth and faint moisture against her skin. Thank goodness you’re still with me… As long as you’re alive.

Gradually, the sensation returned to his body. When he lifted his head, a cold, deadly light flickered in his eyes. “Investigate the cause of that accident.”

An hour later, Serena’s eyelids fluttered open.

The ceiling above her was a harsh, blinding white. Her thoughts moved sluggishly. For a brief second, she wondered if she had crossed into the afterlife.

When the truck had barreled straight toward her, she had truly believed the end had arrived.

Just before losing consciousness, a ridiculous thought had surfaced–Will Sebastian scold me for being reckless when he finds out?

As awareness slowly returned, she heard the door handle turn.

“You’re awake.”

Her gaze shifted, focusing with effort. Her throat felt dry. “Sebastian?”

“I’m here.” His tone was controlled, almost flat, though something unreadable lingered in his eyes.

She glanced down at the IV line taped to the back of her hand. “I’m okay.”

“Mm.” He offered nothing more.

She frowned at him. “Why are you acting so distant?”

The words left her mouth, and an odd sense of grievance followed.

She had nearly lost her life, yet he stood there as cold as frost.

His dark eyes settled on her. “So now you’re aware that getting hurt isn’t pleasant?

“If you were afraid of being injured, why drive a car you knew wasn’t safe?”

Her breathing faltered.

How… How could he possibly know that?
