Chapter 276 You Shut Him Out
Yvonne never entered a fight she couldn’t emerge victorious from.

She planned to administer just a little at a time, gradually raising the dose, until eventually, with a small nudge, Serena would hit the same dead–end her mom once did.
The idea that Yvonne intended to repeat the old scheme–using on Serena the same tactic she had employed against Serena’s mom–ignited a fire of anger within Serena.
Sebastian listened as she gave a brief, offhand summary, as if it were nothing, yet his right hand continued to shake uncontrollably.
What if even one link in that chain of events fails? Does that mean I’ll lose her forever?
He didn’t allow himself to imagine the consequences. Fear slammed into him, chest–tightening and relentless.
He could not endure a result so devastating.
“Serena Steele,” he said sharply, using her full name. She froze instantly.
Serena pressed her lips together. The man she had just calmed moments ago now seemed enraged once
more.
And this time, resolving his anger would not be simple.
“When did you find out?” he asked.
Her long lashes blinked. “The night before the wedding,” she admitted.
Sebastian drew in a slow, deep breath. He had even visited her that evening.
Despite countless opportunities, she had not planned to tell him.
“I have to leave. Something urgent came up at work,” he said.
This time, he didn’t allow her to catch his wrist. Without hesitation, he turned and walked away.
Serena couldn’t help but question herself. Did I
ly mess up?
When Lucinda learned her friend had been in a car accident, she raced to the hospital immediately.
“Rena! You gave me a heart attack! Uncle Sebastian said you were here, and I completely panicked.”
Serena forced a bitter smile. No matter how angry he was, he had still arranged for someone to stay with
her.
She couldn’t even identify the emotion stirring inside her.

“Lucinda, I think I made Sebastian
angry,” Serena confessed.

“What?” Lucinda blinked in surprise. “But when he called me, he didn’t sound mad at all.”
“What happened between you two?” she asked, curiosity piqued. “It’s fine, right? It must be his fault! Should I go home and tell Grandpa so he can put him in his place?”
“Don’t!” Serena implored. “This is entirely my fault.”
After listening to her explanation, Lucinda fell silent for a moment.
“I didn’t expect your stepmom to be that cruel. She’s pure poison! She should be locked up for what she’s done.”
The events from over twenty years ago had no living witnesses. With only a few statements from Sherry, it would be nearly impossible to hold Yvonne accountable..
Serena also didn’t want to risk her own safety. But now, knowing the truth about her mom’s death, she refused to remain passive and let herself be bullied any longer.
Step by step, she manipulated Sherry’s guilt to lure Yvonne into making a misstep.
First, she encouraged Donald to divorce Yvonne, provoking her. Then she allowed Yvonne to force her hand.
Only a real car accident could provide undeniable proof that Yvonne had intended to harm her.
Lucinda’s heart ached for her friend. “Don’t blame Uncle Sebastian. I understand why he’s upset.
“Think about it. Uncle Sebastian loves you completely, but when trouble struck, your first reaction wasn’t to tell him. You handled everything yourself, shut him out, and put yourself at risk.
“He’s terrified and probably feels like you don’t trust him, like you don’t love him enough to let him help. Imagine that from his perspective–it’s crushing.”
Serena paused, realizing she hadn’t considered that angle.
When she planned everything, her goal had been to disturb Sebastian as little as possible.
She had already caused him more than “gh worry.
“Rena, you’ve been treating him like a stranger
and that’s why he’s so angry!”
