Serena looked at the stubborn director. When family members faced that kind of tough attitude, many of them started to doubt themselves. They wondered if they were wrong. They thought maybe it really had nothing to do with the hospital.

Ava’s old cell phone suddenly rang. The ringtone was loud. The vice director glanced at her with clear disdain. He looked dismissive.

“Hello, yes, yes. I’m Shawn’s mom. We’re on the fifteenth floor of the inpatient building. That doctor’s clinic is on the third floor. I’m coming over right now.”

Serena’s eyes lit up. “They’re here?”

“Yes. They’re here.”

Serena smiled. “Director, don’t leave. Let’s go downstairs together. Someone will be looking for you soon anyway.”

The law enforcement team had body cameras on. When they saw Ava, one of them spoke.

“Is Leo Brooks the one who was in charge of your son’s surgery?”

“Yes, yes. Officer, it’s him. My son was fine at first. He just had a sore throat. He said my son had a small cyst in his throat and needed surgery. Then he tricked us into going to his private clinic to do the operation.”

Leo froze. “You… Who are you people?”

“We’re from the North District Medical Enforcement Team. Here’s my work ID. Please show me your medical license.”

Leo stammered. He couldn’t take it out. His eyes darted around in panic as he looked at the vice director.

The vice director felt a chill in his heart. “Dr. Brooks, did you forget to bring your license? Or maybe you can’t find it right now. Take your time. No rush.”

One of the enforcement officers let out a cold laugh. “It’s fine if you can’t find it. It’s the internet age. Log in to the system and pull up your record. Let me see it.”

The enforcement officer turned to the man who had just tried to help. “You’re the vice director of this hospital, right? Explain something to me. Why did your registered business license expire a month ago? Why haven’t you renewed it?”

The vice director went silent.

“How could it have expired?”

“You’re the vice director, and you don’t know? Fine. If you don’t know, find someone who does and have them explain it to me.”

The enforcement officers stayed sharp and direct. The main director walked over with a smile on his face.

“We’ve already applied to renew the business license. It just takes some time to process. Don’t worry. We’re absolutely operating legally. We applied within the required time frame.”

The enforcement officer looked at Ava and explained, “Ma’am, they’ve applied for renewal. It just takes some time before the new license is issued.”

Then he turned back. “Leo, where’s your medical license?”

Leo couldn’t produce it. If they checked the system, it would show that his license had been revoked a year

ago.

The enforcement team pulled out the record they had found.

“It shows here that your license was revoked a year ago. You’re practicing medicine illegally right now. Your hospital must immediately suspend this department for rectification. We’ll issue an administrative penalty notice. We’ll also report your illegal medical practice to the Health Commission.”
