Nassau gave a mild, amused smile. “Works for me. Call me whatever you like. And hey, getting to taste Mr. Levine’s cooking tonight? That’s an honor in itself.”

Sebastian let out a short scoff. “Alright, Mr. Nelson, that’s enough. You can stop roasting me

now.”

Curious, she tilted her head. “Mr. Nelson, were you two at the same university?”

Nassau chuckled. “Yeah, but not just the same school. He was my junior.”

She blinked, surprised. “Sebastian, you studied law too?”

“Mrs. Levine, you didn’t know?” Nassau leaned back, clearly enjoying this. “He double majored in finance and law. If it weren’t for the family business waiting for him, our professor would’ve chained him to the legal field and never let him go.”

Sebastian kept eating, as if none of it concerned him. He was calm and unbothered. He ladled a bowl of soup for Serena and set it in front of her. “Drink this first. It’s better while it’s warm. We can talk after.”

Serena suddenly found herself at a loss for words. So, this is how capable people stay so calm?

Watching Sebastian sit there so composed, so effortlessly at ease, stirred something sharp in her chest. She hated to admit it, but she was jealous.

Back when Serena was in law school, she barely had a second to breathe. Her days were packed from morning to night, and she still squeezed in internships at different firms, working as an assistant, hustling to build experience wherever she could.

Meanwhile, Sebastian wrapped up two courses like it was nothing. From the way Nassau talked, it was obvious Sebastian had excelled in his law program.

What she did not know was that he had chosen to study law in the first place because of an offhand joke from a little girl years ago.

Sebastian did not bother playing humble. He gave a faint, self–satisfied smile. “I’m pretty good, I guess. But when it comes to law, Mr. Nelson is better. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can always ask him.”

It finally clicked for Serena.

I am still sulking because I messed up the case and cannot let it go. This man always has his own quiet way of taking care of me, loving me so gently that I almost do not notice it, like steady rain soaking into the earth without a sound.

Nassau chuckled. “Mrs. Levine, relax. We’re just exchanging ideas. It’s not some formal consultation.”

She had always been stubborn with herself. Deep down, she knew the outcome could have been better, and the fact that she had not managed to get there left her feeling guilty and frustrated. She looked at him thoughtfully. “Mr. Nelson, when you lose a case, how do you deal with it?”

“Mrs. Levine, is there any genius lawyer out there who can guarantee a one hundred percent win rate?”

She let out a soft laugh. “No.”

“Exactly,” Nassau said gently. “One loss doesn’t mean much. There are too many uncertainties in litigation. Sometimes the evidence isn’t strong enough. Sometimes the legal relationships are tangled and complicated. Sometimes the client lies.

“Even if we think we have solid proof, those uncertainties can still flip everything upside down.

“It’s like a doctor who can never promise a patient that a surgery will be absolutely risk–free. What we can do as lawyers is anticipate every possible variable for our clients, put ourselves in their shoes, and fight for the fairest outcome we can get.”

She nodded slowly, something easing in her chest. “Thank you. I understand now.”

“You’re still young,” he said kindly. “If you’re tired, it’s okay to pause and look around before you keep going.”

After seeing Nassau off, Serena slipped her arm through Sebastian’s and smiled up at him. “Honey, thank you. You worked hard cooking today.”
