She understood him well enough to know that once he chose silence, not a single word could be drawn from him.

Sophia greeted the man before her with a warm smile. “Blake, it’s been a long time.”

Blake returned the smile politely. “Ms. Vale, my father and I received the flowers you sent after my grandfather passed away.”

Sophia nodded gently. “My condolences. I never expected that you would turn out to be Rena’s cousin.”

“Fate works in mysterious ways.” Blake smoothly changed the subject. “My father asked me to bring you a wedding gift this time. Ms. Vale, congratulations on your marriage.”

Wyatt had sent her a gift every time she remarried.

Sophia accepted it with a smile. “Thank you.”

“Did you attend Lucinda’s wedding?” she asked.

A thoughtful look passed through Blake’s eyes. “I brought a gift, but I didn’t meet her. Please don’t worry, Ms. Vale. I won’t interfere in her life.”

She let out a quiet sigh. “My daughter is stubborn. There was no need to send a gift. If she knew you came, she would probably dwell on it for a long time.

Her husband treats her well, and that gives me peace of mind. Blake, have you considered getting married?” she questioned.

He answered with a faint, bitter smile. “I probably won’t get married.”

She did not press the matter any further.

She had always understood her former stepson well. There might once have been a fleeting spark of attraction between him and her daughter, but it had never grown into love.

She refused to let her daughter repeat the mistakes she herself had made. In her heart, she believed that being loved would always bring more happiness than loving someone alone.

“Blake, you’re leaving already? Why not stay a little longer?” She hurried toward the airport.

A faint smile touched Blake’s lips. “I’ve seen enough of this place. It’s time to go back. When you have the chance, bring Sebastian to visit.”

He fully intended to extend the same warm “hospitality” to him in return.
