Elijah forced his way in, prying Winona’s lips apart. Even when a sharp sting shot through his tongue, he refused to pull back. Their tangled breaths gradually softened. What started as a rough claim melted into slow, lingering licks.
He cupped her face in both hands. His thumbs brushed over her flushed earlobes, red and warm until his fingertips came away damp with tears.
Panic hit him.
Her fair cheeks were streaked with them.
A sharp crack split the air as she slapped him across the face.
Elijah pressed his lips together. “Stop crying, Winona. Still want to hit me? Hit the other side too.”
Winona drove her knee hard into his lower abdomen. “Like I’d want to hit you. Elijah, I already told you we’re done. The more you act like this, the more I can’t stand you. Stop coming after me!”
Pain flashed across his face.
He narrowed his eyes, watching her retreat. Her shoulder blades cut sharp shadows as she walked away.
Winona steadied her breathing and sniffed. Her makeup had to be a mess by now. She needed the restroom, fast, but before she could make it, a pair of dark hands yanked her into the trees.
She stared at his dark skin, fear flashing across her expression. What are you doing?”
Greed burned in his eyes. Panic surged through her.
She tried to scream, but his filthy hand clamped over her mouth.
Winona shook her head, tears spilling over. She struggled nonstop until she finally pushed the foreigner too far.
“Shut up!”
The slap rang out as it landed across her cheek.
He hauled her up like she weighed nothing, like a chicken in his grip.
Deep in the woods, he tossed her onto the ground like she was nothing.
Winona watched him unbuckle his belt, and every hair on her body stood on end. She backed away step by step. Her vision blurred with tears. “Please don’t. I’ll give you money. Just let me go. I’ll pay you, I swear.”
A loud bang ripped through the air.
She clutched her head and curled into herself. The foreigner in front of her was suddenly slammed hard to the around.
Elijah snapped.

Still not satisfied, he grabbed the man by the collar forced his head down, and smashed the back of it against a tree trunk. “That’s enough, Elijah! You’re going to kill him.” Winona came back to her senses, panic creeping in.
At the sound of her voice, the rage in him eased a fraction. He let go and flung the man aside like he was nothing.
He crouched in front of her. “Are you hurt?”
She shook her head. “Let’s go.”
Elijah bent down, hooked her arm over his shoulder, and lifted her into his arms.
She clutched his collar. “Is he going to die?”
His gaze turned cold as it landed on the man sprawled on the ground. “He’ll live.”
They had barely stepped out of the trees when they ran into Austin, who had clearly been searching for her in a hurry.
Austin frowned, his eyes locking onto Winona in Elijah’s arms. His gaze tightened. “Thanks. You can put her down now.”
Elijah raised a brow. The man standing in front of me in that perfectly tailored suit is actually Winona’s brother, Austin?
“Hey, I’m Elijah. I’m Winona’s-‘
A short, cold laugh cut him off. “Oh, so you’re that heartless ex–boyfriend she had.”
Elijah went quiet for a second. “I wouldn’t exactly call myself heartless.”
Winona tugged at his collar. “Put me down. Now.”
He had no choice but to let her
She immediately slipped behind Austin. “Austin, I just ran into two creeps. I want to go back.”
Two? Elijah thought.
Austin’s gaze turned icy. “Don’t let me see you again. If you come anywhere near her, you won’t make it back home alive.”
Sawyer circled for a while before finally spotting Elijah, looking completely disheveled. “Where the hell did you run off to chase her?”
Elijah’s expression stayed blank.
“Sawyer, what kind of messed–up design is this for a villa? That stretch of woods behind the garden is basically an open invitation for something bad to happen.”
