Elijah pushed the door open and raised an eyebrow.

He strolled over, one hand in his pocket. Then he glanced at the pieces in their hands and smirked. “Excuse me, are you buying these? If not, I’d like to get them for my mother.”

Winona smiled warmly at her. “Elena, are you buying? If not, this guest will take care of it.”

“Not buying! Winona, you’re such a disappointment!” She stormed out with her friends.

Winona pressed her lips together and looked at Elijah. After a beat, she managed, “Thanks.”

He chuckled. “I was serious about buying.”

She looked away. “Alright, I’ll give you twenty percent off.”

He teased, “Not bad, finally not full price.”

She froze, turned her back, and felt her ears warm.

Last time, I just wanted to annoy him. Now he’s bringing up old stuff.

Winona walked him to the door this time, though her tone still carried a hint of awkwardness.

“Winona, can I come by more often?” Elijah’s cool voice had a trace of hurt, almost pitiful.

“We don’t sell men’s clothes here.” She was refusing, just in a roundabout way.

But he didn’t give up. “My mom, my aunt, they’d all wear it.”

He grinned, clearly pleased with himself.

Even though Elijah thought he’d made some progress, Sawyer saw it as practically nothing.

He kicked Sawyer lightly. “Then go check on that Elena for me. Why does she keep picking on Winona for no reason?”

Sawyer tapped his nose. “Asking me again? How would I know?”

“Then find out!”

Used to being bossed around, Sawyer quietly went to dig for information. “Here you go. The info’s right here. Elena does like taking little advantages, but don’t worry, she wouldn’t bully Winona. Winona’s basically the favorite at home. Nobody messes with her.” Even so, Elijah couldn’t help tattling. Normally, he wouldn’t care, but that day Elena’s tone in the shop had been really sharp.

A few days later, Henry kept thinking about Elijah’s tea room. He also remembered the half–finished chess game.

Elijah spent most of his days in the tea room. So it wasn’t surprising when Henry came by again. “Old Mr. Campbell, taking care of

Henry got a membership card, and Elijah didn’t refuse. If he didn’t charge, Henry probably wouldn’t bother coming.
