Serena arrived at the law firm early that morning.
"Serena, you finally made it. The boss has been furious all morning; everyone's been waiting for you to put out the fire," her assistant, Avery Cox, whispered close to her ear. "The case Lily and Shawn handled in court yesterday completely fell apart."
Serena flashed an OK sign and knocked before heading into the conference room.
"Come in."
The moment she pushed the door open, she saw Lily Marshall and Shawn Yonge looking utterly defeated, while Eugene Beaumont sat there looking livid, clearly too angry to bother speaking.
"Serena, you're here," Eugene said at last. "How did the first hearing go yesterday for that guarantee contract dispute with Sterling Capital you were handling?"
Serena took her seat. "It went smoothly, Boss. The other party has already expressed interest in settling."
"Very good." Eugene nodded. "The two of you should learn from Serena. Then, I wouldn't need to take blood pressure pills every day. Alright, you two can leave. Serena, stay behind."
Serena took a deep breath. "Boss, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
Facing the strongest lawyer on his team, Eugene was naturally far more patient. "Go on."
"My legal advisory contract with Levine Studios expires at the end of the month. After that, I'd like to hand it over to either Shawn or Lily. What do you say, Boss?"
Levine Studios was a subsidiary of Levine Group, and its head was Trevor himself. Since they had already broken up, Serena didn't want to have any further entanglement with him.
Eugene frowned slightly. "Levine Studios was a client you personally brought in, and now you want to hand it off? Serena, you sure you're not sleep-talking?"
Levine Studios itself wasn't a big deal, but the Levine Group behind it was a massive resource. Eugene had called Serena in that day precisely because he wanted to see if there was a chance to connect with Levine Group's senior management through her.
If their firm could land even one piece of Levine Group's core business, the long-term gains would be enormous.
Serena's engagement to Trevor was known only within their social circle. People outside Denton's upper echelon had no idea she was connected to the Levine family, much less that she was the heiress of Steele Tech.
"Boss, I know exactly what I'm saying," Serena replied calmly. "To be honest, I only secured the Levine Studios engagement in the first place because my ex-boyfriend helped make the introduction. Now that we've broken up, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to stay involved."
It was the first time Eugene had heard that her boyfriend was connected to Levine Studios. "Weren't you two about to get married?"
Serena gave a bitter smile. "That's not happening anymore."
After a long moment of thought, he tapped the table lightly. "Alright. Once the contract expires, I'll take over the client personally."
…
The entire morning passed in a blur. When Serena finally finished her work, she realized it was already 11:30 a.m., and there hadn't been a single text from Trevor. She let out a quiet scoff, unsurprised.
"Serena, are you still having a light lunch today?" a colleague teased. "You're already so slim. You really don't need to worry about not fitting into your wedding dress."
Serena's eyes curved into a smile. "I'm not dieting anymore. Whatever you're having for lunch, I'll join you."
"Wow, so Rena's finally breaking her three-month streak?!" Someone joked.
"I'm not breaking anything," Serena replied casually. "I just don't need to wear a wedding dress anymore. Let's go—if we don't head down now, we'll be stuck waiting for the elevator again."
The group exchanged glances. What does she mean by not needing a wedding dress? Isn't she getting married at the end of the month?
…
Trevor had chatted with Amber until dawn before finally falling asleep. He slept on the couch, with his most beloved younger sister in a bedroom barely thirty feet away, yet he slept more soundly than he had in a long time.
When he woke up, it was already noon. Only then did it hit him that he was supposed to get his marriage registered with Serena.
He had expected his phone to be bombarded with messages questioning him, but when he lit up the screen, there was nothing from Serena at all—just a few messages from his buddies. Trevor rubbed his temples and got to his feet.
He didn't wake Amber, who was still fast asleep, but left her a note and hurried back to the villa.
…
Another business trip? Hadn't we agreed that we'll be going to the city hall today?
Instantly, he recalled the night before. I'd already given her a gift. What's there still to be upset about now? If anything, I should be the one upset—how dare she not notify me she has to go on a business trip?!
Seeing that he responded casually yet made no move to call, Lucy sighed inwardly. Who knows if this marriage between Mr. and Mrs. Levine is even going to happen anymore?
