Julian's grip on Hester's hand loosened slightly. "Have you contacted Neil?"
"Yes, I called him. Neil is almost here..."
"I'm heading back right now." Julian ended the call abruptly.
He looked down at Hester, who was still frozen in shock against his chest. "We are flying back to Northwood City immediately."
Hester's eyelashes fluttered. She gave a numb, almost imperceptible nod.
...
Two hours later, their private jet touched down in Northwood City.
A black SUV, dispatched by Neil, was already idling outside the terminal.
Julian and Hester walked out of the airport, slid into the backseat, and sped straight toward the hospital.
Forty tense minutes later, they arrived.
Neil was waiting at the main entrance. The moment he saw Julian and Hester step out of the vehicle, he jogged over.
"Mr. Weston. Mrs. Weston."
Julian looked sharply at his assistant. "What did the doctors say?"
"He cracked the back of his head on the stairs and lost a significant amount of blood. He has a mild skull fracture. They ran some scans, and thankfully, there's no sign of intracranial bleeding yet." Neil hesitated for a split second before adding, "Caden has been moved to a private room. He's stable for the moment, but he hasn't regained consciousness."
Hearing the prognosis, the suffocating tension in Julian's face eased slightly.
"Let's go. Take me to Caden."
Neil nodded and led the way through the sterile corridors.
Hester followed closely behind. Suddenly, she looked at Neil and asked, "How does a perfectly fine child just tumble down a flight of stairs?"
Neil didn't stop walking, but a highly uncomfortable expression crossed his face.
He threw a nervous, sidelong glance at Julian, clearly hesitating to speak.
