Leaving the hospital, Neil and Gael drove straight back to Weston Corp.
Inside the sleek black Maybach, Neil kept his eyes on the road but shot a stern glance at his passenger. "You shouldn't have brought up the kidnapping with Mrs. Weston."
Gael had an earbud in one ear, blasting a heavy EDM track, her fingers drumming aggressively against the dashboard.
Hearing him speak, she paused, pulled out the earbud, and looked at him. "What did you say?"
Neil frowned, his handsome features tightening with irritation. He eyed the earbud and sighed. "Assistant Montgomery, I've told you before: do not listen to club music while driving. It's distracting."
"Relax, I'm an excellent driver," Gael dismissed with a wave, intentionally poking the bear. "Besides, if I don't listen to some EDM while trapped in a car with you, I'll spiral into clinical depression."
Neil had no words.
Being a corporate workhorse was exhausting enough without having to wrangle a fiercely rebellious subordinate. He was reconsidering all his life choices.
Taking a deep, steadying breath, he tried again. "I said, do not bring up the kidnapping from five years ago with Mrs. Weston again."
"Why not?" Gael shot back defiantly. "Hester is your boss's wife, so you're terrified of her. That's your problem. She's my best friend. Why shouldn't we talk about it?"
"Some things are better left buried," Neil warned, his tone grave. "Mr. Weston has his reasons for keeping it from her. If you truly are her friend, you should consider her well-being. Knowing the truth doesn't always bring peace."
Gael narrowed her eyes, catching the heavy implication in his words.
"Tell you what," she pivoted smoothly, her tone entirely too earnest. "Tell me the secret. I swear on my life, I absolutely will not tell your boss's wife."
Neil gave her a thin, cynical smile. "True. You won't tell my boss's wife. You'll just tell your best friend."
Gael scowled. *Smartass.*
Neil adjusted his rimless glasses. "Remember what I said today, Assistant Montgomery."
"Yeah, whatever. Ignore you, got it," Gael huffed, rolling her eyes to the ceiling.
