Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 156

The moment Caden saw Julian, he shrank deeper into Hester's embrace.

"I'm not going back! I'm staying here with Mommy!"

Julian stopped a few feet away, the air around him thick and suffocating. "Caden Weston, who told you to run off like that? What if you had gotten lost?"

"I wanted to find Mommy! None of you would let me see her, so I came to find her myself!"

Usually so obedient, Caden huddled stubbornly against Hester, his tear-streaked voice filled with defiance.

Julian's face was carved from ice. "You are coming back with me right now."

"No!" Caden hugged Hester even tighter. "I'm not going back! I want to stay right here!"

Julian glared at the boy, his expression dark, completely baffled as to why his historically well-behaved son was suddenly throwing such a massive, unreasonable tantrum.

Hester observed the standoff between father and son, her own emotions swirling in a complicated mess.

She had witnessed firsthand just how dependent Caden used to be on Julian.

She truly never expected the day would come when Caden's reliance on her would eclipse his bond with his father.

It seemed Julian had been so hyper-focused on comforting Seraphina that he had entirely neglected Caden's emotional state.

Children are incredibly intuitive. Caden was definitely acting out because he could sense Julian's sudden lack of patience and affection. Worse, Julian's blatant favoritism toward Seraphina was clearly putting immense pressure on the boy.

After all, Caden had just confessed that Julian had yelled at him simply because Seraphina started crying.
