"Who said anything about firing you?" Hester looked at her, a chilling smile curving her lips. "Five years ago, I promoted you from Director to VP. Now that I'm back, everyone goes back to where they belong."
Melody was furious. "I've generated millions for this company over the past five years. What gives you the right to demote me?!"
"If you have an issue with my restructuring, you are more than welcome to hand in your resignation."
Hester shot a look at Gael. Gael understood instantly. She marched forward, shooing Melody and Linda toward the door. "Out, out, out! This is Ms. Carrington's office now. Next time you want to come in, learn how to knock!"
Gael shoved Melody a little too hard. Melody stumbled back, her designer heel twisting sharply. A jolt of pain shot up her ankle, and she let out a sharp gasp.
"Ms. Monroe, are you okay?!" Linda quickly caught her boss, then spun around and screamed at Gael, "What is wrong with you?! Are you completely unhinged? You can't just assault people in the workplace—"
A sharp, echoing slap cracked across Linda's face. The force sent her stumbling to the floor. Her lip split open, and a violent red welt immediately bloomed across her cheek.
Holding her burning face, Linda began to wail. "Ms. Monroe, they're psychotic! If you let them run the company, they're going to destroy it!"
Melody glared at Gael. "How dare you hit her!"
"She accused me of assault, so I figured I might as well make it true!" Gael rolled her wrist, shaking out the sting of the slap, before fixing her razor-sharp glare on Melody. "What's the matter? You want a turn?"
"You..." Terrified by the sheer violence in Gael's eyes, Melody instinctively took a step back.
Gael was nearly five-foot-nine, and that slap had a terrifying amount of power behind it. She clearly worked out. Fighting back physically would end horribly.
Melody bent down and helped a sobbing Linda to her feet. "Linda, come on. Let's get some ice on that."
Linda cried through her fingers. "Ms. Monroe, this is assault. I'm pressing charges..."
"Let's just go outside first," Melody sighed softly, looking every inch the helpless victim being bullied by a tyrant.
