Hester paused slightly.
She wasn't surprised by Caden's reaction.
In truth, from the moment he had come running to her for comfort, she had sensed that he already understood Seraphina was his real mother.
He just couldn't process it yet. He had desperately sought out the people he felt safest with to find some sense of security.
Hester gently took his small hand in hers. "I know you feel hurt and confused. If it were me, and someone told me I had to call a complete stranger 'Mom,' I'd feel really upset too."
"Really?" Caden looked up at her, blinking his large eyes. "So... I didn't do anything wrong?"
"Of course you didn't. You didn't get to choose how you were born, and you didn't get to choose who raised you."
Hester held his gaze steadily. "We grown-ups aren't always right either. We make mistakes. I think your daddy was wrong to yell at you. But he knows he made a mistake now. Look, he even stayed home from work today just to spend time with you. He only yelled because he was anxious and panicked, but his love for you hasn't changed at all."
"But she just feels like a stranger. When I look at her, I can't connect her to the word 'Mom' at all." Caden pouted. "I like having you as my mommy better. Even if... even if we aren't related by blood, I still love you!"
Hester smiled softly. "Then how about you do what Gigi did? You can make me your godmother. How does that sound?"
"A godmother? Like the ones in the penguin movie?"
"Exactly."
"Okay!" Caden nodded enthusiastically. "Then from now on, you'll be my godmother, and Gigi will be my god-sister!"
"That sounds perfect. I absolutely adore both you and Gigi. Even when the baby in my tummy is born, I will still treat you exactly the same as I do now. So you never have to worry that I'll ignore you if you acknowledge your real mom. No matter whose child you are, in my heart, you will always be my amazing Caden."
