Lena was just walking out with a freshly brewed pot of chicken soup when she overheard Hester's words.
She quickly set the soup down on the dining table and glanced at Julian.
"Mr. Weston, Mrs. Weston doesn't eat organ meats."
Julian's lips pressed into a tight line. After a heavy moment, he looked at Hester. "I'm sorry. I should have made it clear to her."
"It's not that you didn't make it clear. It's that you genuinely had no idea," Hester stated, ruthlessly exposing him.
Julian's brow furrowed tightly. His lips parted as if to speak, but ultimately, he said nothing.
Hester couldn't care less about his reaction. She turned directly to Lena. "Could you please whip up two dishes that fit my usual diet?"
"Of course, right away. I actually prepped a few ingredients matching your preferences just in case." Lena pointed toward the kitchen. "I'll get cooking right now. The guest should be finishing up soon anyway. Why don't you and Mr. Weston take a seat?"
Hester took Caden's hand and led him to the dining table.
Caden sat obediently beside her, then looked over at Julian. "Daddy, come sit!"
Julian gave a low hum of agreement, walked over, and took the seat directly opposite Hester.
Just then, Seraphina emerged from the kitchen carrying the freshly cooked pork kidney slices.
"I didn't make these too spicy," she announced cheerfully. She walked over to the table and set the overwhelmingly pungent, spicy dish down, deliberately pushing it slightly closer to Hester. She looked at Hester with bright, eager eyes. "Here, Hester, try some of this first."
Hester's brow twitched into a subtle frown.
She rarely ate heavily seasoned food, and she almost never touched anything spicy.
Hester's newly relaxed brow knitted back together.
She had made herself incredibly clear. Was Seraphina completely incapable of understanding basic English, or was she doing this on purpose?
"If it's not an allergy, maybe just try a little," Julian suggested, looking at Hester. "The doctor did say you were slightly anemic. A little liver would be good for you."
Hester closed her eyes and took a deep, steadying breath.
When she opened them again, her gaze locked onto Julian. Her eyes were completely devoid of warmth. "Julian, I am not allergic to offal. I don't eat it because I absolutely despise it. There are countless ways to treat anemia. I do not need to force myself to eat liver that makes me sick just to get some iron!"
Julian frowned, but before he could respond, Seraphina practically tripped over her own words to interrupt.
"I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry, Hester, please don't be mad. It's my fault. Please don't fight with Julian over this, it's all on me. I should have asked what you liked before I came. You're completely right, there are plenty of ways to get iron. If you hate it, then don't eat it. Please, whatever you do, don't let a tiny little thing like this upset you. You're pregnant, and keeping a positive mood is the most important thing!"
