Seraphina spoke at a frantic pace, acting utterly terrified that if she didn't intervene fast enough, Hester and Julian would rip each other apart.
The harder she played the frantic peacemaker, the more aggressive and unreasonable it made Hester look.
Julian's expression darkened considerably. "Hester, enough."
Hester saw right through Seraphina's pathetic little performance, but she couldn't even be bothered to argue with her.
She simply stared at Julian and let out a cold scoff. "Enough of what? What did I do? I don't eat offal—that is a personal preference. Are you telling me that to eat a meal in my own house, I have to owe people favors and provide them with emotional coddling?"
"Hester is right, you can't force yourself to eat something you hate."
Seraphina's tone was incredibly appeasing. She immediately whipped her head toward Julian, her brows furrowed as she gently chided him. "Julian! What did I tell you earlier? Hester is pregnant. As her husband, you need to be understanding and accommodating. Why won't you listen? You just lack emotional intelligence. You don't know how to sweet-talk your wife! And you always have that cold look on your face. Honestly, you are such a handful!"
It was a masterful speech, perfectly showcasing the magnanimity of an older sister figure.
On the surface, she was defending Hester and scolding Julian, but the heavy implication beneath every word was that Hester had a terrible temper and required everyone to walk on eggshells around her.
Hester shot Seraphina an icy glare.
What a brilliant, manipulative retreat.
She was too exhausted to engage with Seraphina because it simply wasn't worth her energy.
Besides, Caden was sitting right there. For his sake, she was willing to turn a blind eye to the theatrics, but she absolutely refused to compromise her own boundaries.
She wasn't going to eat the damn offal, and no one in this room was going to force her.
Julian rubbed the bridge of his nose and let out a heavy sigh. "Seraphina, you've been working all morning and you must be exhausted. Please, sit down and eat."
