Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 178

Over at Silverstream Villa, Neil had officially hired a new housekeeper, an older woman named Jane.

Considering Seraphina's alleged emotional fragility, Julian had also instructed Neil to hire an elite governess. Ms. Linden was about Lena's age, boasted ten solid years of childcare experience, and lived off-site, working strict morning-to-evening hours.

Perhaps it was Ms. Linden's professional guidance, but within a single week, Caden's entire attitude toward Seraphina had drastically shifted.

Over the past two days, Caden practically bounced back from his visits, his joy entirely visible. He even started excitedly chattering to Hester about everything he and Seraphina did together.

Listening to Caden, Hester could clearly map out Seraphina's sudden "progress."

Hester was genuinely relieved that Caden was finally bonding with his biological mother.

No matter how much he loved his godmother, it would never truly replace a mother's love. Hester had always been incredibly pragmatic about that.

Furthermore, if Caden felt safe and loved by Seraphina, Hester could finally breathe a sigh of relief. It meant when she finally packed her bags and left, she wouldn't have to spend the rest of her life worrying about him.

...

That evening, Julian had a business dinner and wasn't coming home.

Hester and Caden ate dinner together.

Lena had made a rich, savory chicken soup. The broth was perfect, the meat practically falling off the bone. Hester got one drumstick, and Caden got the other. They ate in companionable silence.

After polishing off his chicken leg, Caden looked up, licking the savory grease from his lips, and stared intensely at Hester.

"Godmother."

"Hmm?" Hester looked up from her bowl. "What is it?"

Caden frowned slightly, his small face scrunched in deep conflict.

"Caden, you can tell me anything. It's okay."
