Caden frowned, latching onto the most terrifying implication of her words. "Mommy... does that mean I can't live with Daddy and Godmother anymore?"
Seraphina's face stiffened as she realized she had severely miscalculated her explanation. She shot a panicked glance up at Julian.
Caden's eyes instantly welled with tears. "I get it now. I love Godmother, and I love you, and I love Daddy. I thought since we loved each other, we could all just live together..."
He couldn't comprehend why the adult world had to be so ridiculously complicated. His little head dropped forward in defeat. His grip on Hester's hand loosened slightly.
Hester looked down at the heartbroken boy, her lips pressing together.
She knew Caden was devastated, but technically, Seraphina wasn't wrong. He had to learn the reality of their living situation eventually.
Besides, the boy's biological mother was the one delivering the harsh truth; it wasn't Hester's place to intervene. So she chose to remain silent.
Julian threw a conflicted glance at Hester before sighing and dropping to one knee in front of his son.
He gently ruffled Caden's hair with a large, comforting hand. "Buddy, I promise you, even after Hester and I have a baby of our own, we'll still love you just as much. You will always be our child."
Caden pouted, his bottom lip trembling. "So I can still come back and live with you?"
"Of course you can." Julian offered a reassuring smile. "You are welcome here anytime."
"But... if I stay here, Mommy will be all alone over there. She'll be so lonely," Caden pointed out.
Julian frowned, clearly backed into a corner by the child's airtight logic.
Seeing his hesitation, Seraphina jumped in. "Julian, please don't take him seriously. He's just a child and doesn't understand what he's asking. I'm an adult; I'll be perfectly fine living alone. Besides, our houses are so close, it practically feels like we're living together anyway."
