Julian didn't answer, simply saying, "Go back to your work."
Lena heard him and said no more.
When she realized Hester was gone, her biggest worry was Hester's safety. Now that Julian had spoken, she felt much more at ease. As for whether Hester would return, that was up to Julian. This was a matter between husband and wife; as an outsider, Lena didn't dare to ask too much.
...
Second-floor master bedroom.
Julian pushed the door open.
The room hadn't changed much.
The bedding on the large bed was neatly made, but the pregnancy book on the nightstand was gone.
Counting the days, Hester had only been back for a little over half a month.
And in that time, they had gone from sleeping in the same bed with different dreams to living in the same house but separate rooms. They rarely even spoke two calm words to each other.
Hester was right. They had long been emotionally estranged.
Julian walked into the walk-in closet.
The clothes and suitcases Hester had brought back were gone.
The closet was only missing a small section. All the clothes, bags, and jewelry he had bought for her as her husband after they were married—she hadn't taken a single piece.
Just like the first time she moved out.
She left cleanly, decisively, leaving behind not a single trace of their shared memories.
Looking at the closet, Julian suddenly let out a scoffing laugh.
It was tinged with mockery.
She always accused him of being heartless and cold.
But wasn't she exactly the same?
Carrying his child, yet entirely focused on divorcing him, desperate to sever everything connected to him!
She was the one who said she loved him, and she was the one who said she didn't.
Neil frowned, even more lost. "Then where do you think she would go?"
"She's still in the country." Julian sounded certain.
Hearing this, Neil breathed a slight sigh of relief. "As long as she's in the country, she'll be easier to find."
"There's no rush to look for her yet."
No rush?
Neil looked at Julian, confused. "Aren't you worried about her? She's pregnant. Plus, even though the people from the previous kidnapping incident were caught, there's been some new movement overseas... In times like this, it's better if we remain as cautious as possible."
Julian didn't immediately reply.
He sat in silence, his fingers tapping a faint, rhythmic beat against the desktop.
After a moment, he spoke, his voice low. "If I'm not mistaken, the person who helped her should be Chiara Carrington. Arrange for a few men to head over there and protect her from the shadows."
He lifted his gaze to Neil, his eyes dark and cold. "As for the situation overseas, have Declan Reed go deal with it."
Neil nodded. "Yes, I'll make the arrangements immediately."
