Seraphina wanted to take Caden abroad?
Hester didn't buy it for a second.
She knew exactly how deeply obsessed Seraphina was with Julian. There was no universe where she would willingly exile herself to another country.
It was an empty threat. Seraphina was just using Caden as a pawn, fully confident that Julian would never let his precious heir leave.
Knowing exactly what game the woman was playing, Hester kept her voice detached. "Caden, if you don't want to leave the country, you need to talk to your mother about it. Or tell your dad. I have absolutely no right to interfere in that."
"But why?! You're my Godmother! Daddy said that both you and Mommy are my family..."
"There are a lot of things you're just too young to understand, and I can't explain them to you." Hester sounded exhausted, but her resolve was absolute. "Look, if you don't want to move, you have to talk to your parents. I have a lot of work right now, and I really don't have time for this."
With that, ignoring Caden's heartbreaking wails, she brutally cut the call.
She knew saying those things would absolutely crush the little boy.
But she and Seraphina were mortal enemies. If Hester kept indulging Caden and acting like a surrogate mother, Seraphina's jealousy and paranoia would inevitably boil over.
Seraphina couldn't lay a finger on Hester right now, but in a fit of rage, she might very well take it out on Caden.
He was just a kid. Hester refused to let him become collateral damage in their toxic war.
Cutting him off brutally now was honestly the most protective thing she could do for him.
...
The typhoon had missed them entirely, leaving Coralton City basking in perfect 75-degree weather.
It was a gorgeous, breezy day.
Hester slipped into a soft beige sundress, pulled a light white cardigan over her shoulders, grabbed her purse, and walked out of her room.
