Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 246

"Hold on, that doesn't sound right," Ms. Crane said, frowning as she stared at Seraphina. "A husband accompanying his wife to a prenatal checkup is perfectly normal. You're her sister-in-law, yet you find that shocking? What, is a man supporting his pregnant wife some kind of forbidden concept where you come from?"

Seraphina choked on her own anger, suddenly realizing she had broken character.

It was all that bitch Hester's fault! Didn't she claim she wanted a divorce? If she was so desperate to leave, why didn't she just abort the baby?! She was obviously using the child to keep her hooks in Julian!

Seething with rage but forcing her face back into a mask of gentle concern, Seraphina smiled softly. "No, you misunderstand. I was just surprised because they had a massive fight recently. She ran away from home, and they're both so incredibly stubborn. Neither of them wants to compromise. I even told Julian he needed to apologize, but he said she was being terribly unreasonable and he refused to coddle her. I was genuinely terrified they were going to get a divorce."

She sighed heavily, playing the part of the worried family member. When Ms. Crane didn't take the bait, she kept talking.

"I've been sick with worry these past few days. I flew out here hoping to talk some sense into her. After all, they're married and have a baby on the way. A divorce would be so tragic for the child. Hearing that they've made up... I'm just so relieved. I got a little too emotional. Please forgive me."

"Oh, I see!" Ms. Crane nodded, smiling a thin, entirely unconvincing smile. "Well, you can rest easy now. They're doing wonderfully!"

Seraphina's forced smile cracked a little more. "Really? That's... wonderful."

"Oh, absolutely! I don't know what happened between them before, but right now?" Ms. Crane leaned in, adopting an exaggerated local accent. "Julian follows his wife around like a lost puppy! He treats her like absolute royalty. If you hadn't mentioned they were fighting, we never would have guessed. He is head over heels for her!"

Seraphina's hands clenched at her sides, her manicured nails biting deep into her palms. She fought with everything she had to keep smiling.
